PAISTE COMPANY, OF PHZLADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CGRPORATION 0F PENN SYLVANIA.
SWIVEL CONNECTION.
Application filed December 8, 1915.
To all whom z'z may concern.'
Be it known that l, Lnnnnnr H. MonnrHnor, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Swivel Connections, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple, compact and inexpensive device for so connecting a cover and a base structurer-and more particularly the cap and part of the body of a socket,-as will permit of the relative rotation or swiveling of said parts; -the invention also contemplating the provision of means whereby said parte may be rigidly clamped together.
l further desire to provide means for detachably connecting a cover and a base structure, which may be adjusted either to movably connect said parts so as to permit their relative rotation or to immovably clamp them together.
These objects and other advantageous ends I secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a detached perspective view illustrating my invention as designed for use with or as part of a porcelain socket; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the socket top and cap shown in Fig. l.
ln the above drawings, l represents a structure of vitreous material such as porcelain, made in the shape of a flattened cylinder and in the present case constituting the top member of a porcelain lamp socket, whose body, forming no part of the present invention, is omitted. This member has a central passage 2 and a hollow 3 of larger volume opening into the same in which are customarily mounted terminals for the attachment of electric conductors passing through the opening 2. Said conductors are also constructed to be attached to certain apparatus in the socket but as they constitute no part of the invention they also have been omitted.
The upper face of the structure l is normally covered by a cap l made of a dished body of sheet material having a central opening for the reception of a relatively thick internally threaded metal bushing 5 and likewise having its upper edges formed with an inwardly extending flange 6. The

porcelain structure l which serves as a base for the cap or cover e has an annular plane surface for engagement with the `flange G which is held in place thereon by a pair of clamping plates 7 respectively engaged by screws 8 threaded into them preferably adjacent their central points. The heads of these screws are counter sunk in shouldered channels formed in the porcelain base l and it is noted that the cap-covered face of said base has two oppositely disposed recesses 9 whose bottom portions are on the level of the surface designed for engagement by the flanges 6.
The plates 7 enter said recesses A9 and are so proportioned that when their outer ends rest upon the flange 6, their inner ends likewise rest upon the bottoms of the recesses. rlhe openings in which the screws 8 are mounted are preferably inwardly flared as they approach and enter the recesses 9 respectively, so that when the screws have been suiiiciently backed oil', they may be made to assume positions with their axes in converging lines instead of parallel as shown in F ig. 2. At such time the clamping plates 7, which are arranged radially of the base or socket structure l, are moved toward the center' line of said structure with their outer edges withdrawn from engagement with the flange 6.
Obviously therefore, when the parts occupy such positions or are capable of 0ccupying them, it is possible for the cap to be freely removed. Thereafter when said cap is applied to the base, the screws 8 may be set up sufficiently to draw the plates down to the seats provided by the bottoms of the recesses 9 and the flange 6, whereupon said screws naturally assume the parallel positions shown in Fig. 2. lThe cap l is thus held to the base l although it may be freelyr rotated relatively thereto in the manner necessary to screw its threaded bushing 5 onto` the threaded end of a conduit. rThereafter by further setting up the screws 8 the plates 7 may be drawn down to clamping engage ment with the flange 6, thereby immovably holding the cap to the base and preventing its further relative rotation.
If desired the device may be permanently left in acondition allowing the swiveling of the cap or cover on the base, which may with it constitute a complete article of manufacture or be connected to or used as part of some electro-receptive device, as a socket.
I claim Y 1. The combination of a base structure; a cover therefor having a liange lying substantially parallel with and adjacent a portion of the structure; and separate retaining members on opposite sides of the base structure engaging said flange so as to permit relative rotation of the cover and the base structure.
v2. The combination of a base structure of insulating material; a flaring metal cover therefor having an inwardly extending ange at its larger end and mounted with saidend engaging said structure; with radially extending clamping plates mount-ed on the base in position to loosely engage the flange and allow relative rotation of the cover and base. v
3. The combination of a base structure; a cover for said structure having an inwardly extending liange engaging the same; separate clamping plates mounted on the base and loosely extending over the liange; with screws adjustable to canseV the plates to removably Clamp the flange to the base.
4. The combination of a base structure having screw holes therein; a cover having a flange and mounted on the base; a plurality of structurally independent clamping plates engaging the flange; and screws extending through said holes into the clamping plates. 5. The Ycombination of a base's'triicture having screw holes therein; a cover having a flange mounted on the base; clamping plates engaging the flange; and screws extending through said holes into the clamping plates; said screws being laterally movable in their respective holes to permit the plates to move into or out of engagement with the flange of the cover.
6. The combination of a base structure having flaring holes therein; a cover mounted on said structure and having `a flange;V
plates mounted to engage the flange; with screws extending through said holes in the base intothe plates and movable in the wider portions thereof to allow vsail plates to move into or ont of engagement with the flange.
