l To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. HERWIG, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Lamp- Stands, of which the following is a specilication. v
The present invention has to do with improvements in portable lam stands and the like. Lamp stands embodying the features of the present invention are very well adapted for use in automobile garages, machine shops, foundries, etc., but it will appear from an examination of the invention that the features thereof are in no wise limited to the above mentioned or any other particular classes of service.
One 0f the objects of the invention is to provide a lamp stand of suchconstruction that it may readily be moved about on the floor, and also. of such construction that it will possess great stability and resistance against overturning.
Another object of the invention is to provide a, stand of such construction that the height of the lamp can be readily adjusted within wide limits, and such that the lamp can be made to throw its rays of light either up or down or sidewise in any direction desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of lamp stand such that the lamp can be turned about into different positions, any one of which it will securely maintain without the use of special locking devices.
Another object is to so arrange the lamp stand that it may be conveniently used for the` reception of bolts, nuts, washers, and other parts which are under manipulation by the worker for whose convenience the stand is being used. n
@ther objects are to provide a structure of great simplicity which will nevertheless accomplish all of the foregoing as well as other results.
Another object is to provide a structure which can be veryl cheaply manufactured fromstandard parts.v andivith minimum amount of machine tool or special work.,
Other objects and uses of the invention will appear from a detailed description of the same which consists in the features ot construction and combinations of parts here lnafter disclosed and claimed.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a lamp stand embodying the features of the'v present invention, the lamp being set int-o position tothrow its rays of light sidewise and downward;
Fig. 2 is a viewsimilar to that of Fig. l, with the exception that the height of the stand has been reduced and the lamp has been turned into position to throw its rays upwardly;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail cross-sectional View of the adjustment construction whereby the lamp socket may be turned into ditferent positions; and
Fig. A is a cross section taken on the line fil-4: of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The base portion of the lamp stand is designated by the numeral 5. It comprises a relatively large circular pan-shaped portion 6 upstanding from which is a central toss o1 lug 7. A tubular extension 8 having an enlarged collar 9 on its lower end may threaded into the boss 7 to constitute a vertical extension thereof. stand or tubular extension 10 may be connected to the extension 8 in any suitable manner as by the use of a coupling 11.
l'lhe base port-ion 6 is provided with a plurality of casters 12, so that it can be readily moved about the floor. A collar 13 is slidably mounted on the vertical extension., and by making both the sections 8 and 10 ot substantially the same size, said collar may be used on either of them as will be readily understood by the examination of Figs. 1 and 2. rllhis collar 13 carries a thumb-screw 1A by which it may be set in any elevation desired.
A bracket 15 is provided with the bifurcations 16 and 17 which work freely on the vertical extensions and are separated a sufiicient distance to accommodate the collar 18 and permit of the various adjustments in respect thereto. This bracket 15 can be swung about'the vertical extension so as to turn the lamp to l'cause it to tace in any desired direc tion. ln order to permit the bracket to be swung clear around the stand without changing the position of the collar` l have provided anV enlarged opening 18 in the bracket A relatively tall beSO direction. The bifurcations 16 and 17 are sufficiently separated to permit of the necessary vertical movements of thebracket while the lug 20 is passing over the serrations 19. I The outer end of the bracket 15 carries a pintle 21, the construction of which is shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4. This pintle 21 has a circular end portion 22 which is pinned in the slotted end of the bracket by the use of a pin 23, so vthat the pintle can be raised and loweredabout a horizontal aXis. ,The
circular end portion 22 of the pintle has a series of serrations 24 into any one of which a block 25 may be pressed' by a spring 26 so as to lock the pintle firmly in the adjusted 4 position, the block 25 and spring 26 being set -into a recess in the end portionof the bracket 15. l
Another pintle 27 has a sidewise projecting lug` 28 which seats into a socket in the end portion of the pintle 21. This lug 28 has an annular groove 29 into whichare engaged a pair of rivets 30 and 31 of the pintle 21, so that the pintle 27 can be rotated wit-h respect to the pintle 21 while being held against disengagement therefrom. 'A pair of springs 32 and 33 coperate between the pintles 21 and 27 so as to force the annular groove 29 into firm engagement with the rivets 31 and 32 to thereby create sufficient friction between the parts to hold the pintle 27 securely in any adjusted position.
The pintle 27 has a transverse opening 34 through which -is passed the base portion 35 of a lamp socket 36. This lamp socket may carry a shade 37 of any desired form, or for that matter any other lamp construction may be used in connection with the pintle, whether it be electrical, gas, or of any other suitable type.
The construction illustrated is that of an electric lamp. The cord 38 for supplying the current is passed through an openlng 39 in the bracket 15. An eyelet 40 is provided at a suitable point on the base of the stand, and the cord may be passed through said eyelet tight so that its projecting portion 41 may be conveniently used for pulling the stand about on the iOOr.
The base portion of the stand is conveniently provided with an annularup-turned fiange or ri'm 42, so that, the base portion will constitute in effect a pan or the like within which may be placed screws, bolts, nuts, or other machine parts, pending further disposition of them.
I wish particularly.'to-emphasize the fact that by the use of a double sectional vertical extension, it is possible to use this stand either as a relatively high one for throwing the light down onto the upper portion of the structure, such as an automobile, or as a relatively low one for throwing the light up-onto the bottom portion of the automobile or other structure. Also while I have herein shown and describedonly a single embodiment of the features of my invention, still I do not limit myself to said embodiment, ex-
cept as I may do soin the claims.
I claim:
1. A portable lamp stand for the purpose specified, comprising in combination a basemember having a central ost and a peripheral dish-shaped upwardly facing flange, casters for supporting the flange, a collar slidably mounted upon the post, means for locking the collar to they post ata desired elevation thereon, a bifurcated bracket having its arms slidably mounted on the post and engaging the collar between them, the bifurcations permitting of the complete rotation of the arm around the locking means aforesaid, a suitable lamp socket, a pintle whereon the lamp socket is vrotatably mounted, a horizontal pivotal connection between the pintle and the outer end of the bracket armto permit the pintle and lamp socket to be swung about a horizontal axis for the purpose specified, and means for locking the pintle in a desired adjusted position, substantially as described( 2. A portable lamp stand for the'purpose specified, comprising in combination a 'base member including a central post and. a peripheral upwardly facing dish-shaped ,flange on its lower end, suitable casters whereon said flange is mounted, a collar slidably mounted on the post, means for locking said collar in any desired position of vertical adjustment, a bifurcated bracket` aim, the bifurcations of which are slidably mounted on the post and engage the collar between them, the bifurcations permitting the complete rotation of the bracket past .the locking means aforesaid, a suitable lamp socket, and a universal joint connection between the lamp socket and the outer end of the bracket, substantially as described.
3. A portable lamp stand for the purpose specified, comprising in combination a base member, including a vertical central post and a peripheral upwardly facing dishshaped liange on the lower end of the same, suitable casters whereon said flange is 12o mounted, a collar vertically adjustable on the post aforesaid, a bifurcated bracket arm, the bifurcations of which are slidably mounted on the post and embrace the collar between them, a suitable lamp socket, and a universal joint connection betweeny the lamp socket and bracket arm, substantially as described.
4. A portable lamp stand comprising in combination a base member having a central vertical post and an upwardly facing dishi shaped lange on its lower end, said flange having an upturned peripheral rim, suitable casters on which said flange is mounted, a bracket arm slidably mounted on the post,
means for locking the bracket arm in any desired position of vertical adjustment on the post, a suitable lamp socket, and a universal joint connection between the lamp socket and the bracket arm, substantially as described..
5. A portable lamp stand comprising in combination a vertical post, casters for supporting the same, a collar slidably mounted on the post, means for locking said collar in any desired position of vertical adjustment, a bifurcated bracket arm, the bifur/f 6. A portable lamp stand for the purpose specified, comprising in combination a cir- ,cular base member having a central upstanding lug, casters whereon said base member is mounted, a post upstanding from y said lug, a vertical extension for the post and of equal diameter therewith, a collar of suitable size 'to work freely on the post and extension, means for securing the collar thereto.,vv a bifurcated bracket arm, the bifurcations whereof are of suitablesize to work yfreely on the post or extension and be supported by the collar, a suitable lamp socket, a shade thereon, and a swivel connection betweenthe socket and the bracket arm to permit the socket to be turned with the shade facing upwardly when' the bracket arm is in lowered position, and with the shade facing downwardly when the bracket arm is raised, substantially as described.
