PENCIL ATTACHMENT.
Application filed June 12, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs C. Srnvnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at McGill, in the county of White Pine and State of Nevada, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Pencil Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
T he present invention has reference to a pencil attachment, so designed to prevent the accidental displacement thereof from the pencil, and further wherein the construction and manner of securing the same to the pencil will prevent the latter from rolling off an inclined table, desk or the like.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the i'iccompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a view of a pencil showing the attachment applied thereto;
Fig. is a detail vertical section showing the manner of attaching the attachment to the pencil; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said attachn'ient.
Referring more particularly to the accom panying drawing, and for the purpose of having a clear understanding of this invention, A denotes a pencil, having attached to one end thereof a ferrule 5 of hollow tubular form and in the open end of which is inserted an eraser (3. Provided in the ferrule at a point adjacent its connecting end with the pencil, is a pair of diametrically disposed openings 7 through which the attachment denoted by the character 8, is projected. The said attachment consists of a single piece of resilient metal or the like Gopies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

bent at its medial portion to provide a substantially inverted U-shaped clip 9, the vertical portions 10 of said clip terminating in oppositely extending prongs 11, consequently upon the application of the attachment to the ferrule, these prongs 11 will project through the diametric openings 7 of the ferrule and the U-shaped clip will be positioned within the ferrule and directly beneath the inner end of the eraser 6 and serving to prevent any accidental displacement of the attachment from said pencil.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawin the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparout to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while iI have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the ap pended claim.
lVhat is claimed as new, is
In an attachment for pencils, the combination with a ferrule provided with a pair of dia-n'ietrically arranged openings, an at tachment therefor, said attachment being provided with a U-shaped clip terminating in oppositely extending prongs, the prongs of said clip projecting through the openings of the ferrule and extending exteriorly thereof, with the clip positioned within said ferrule, said clip preventing any accidental displacement of the attachment from said ferrule.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
