Description

UNITED STATES ANTHONY S. DE VRIES,
OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
.IMPROVEME NT IN COMPOUNDS FOR GILDING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,383, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: V
Beit known that I, ANTHONY S. DnVRms, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invent-ed a certain new and Improved Gilt Compound; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof. 7
The nature of this invention relates to a compound for gilding purposes, as a substitute for gold-leaf, it being much less expensive than leaf, and producing the same effect upon a bright and polished surface as gold-leaf, and is designed and well adapted to sign and ornamental Work upon metal. This compound consists of gainboge, Japan gold-size, and turpentine, or their substantial equivalents, in about the following proportions: One ounce of gamboge; three ounces of Japan gold-size, or any oleaginous varnish of like character 5 half ounce of turpentine or benzine. These several ingredients are mixed together by grinding in a mill, or otherwise, until the parts are intimately combined, and having the consistency of ordinary paint or varnish.
The process or mode of applying this compound is first to clean off the metal, when used for metallic signs, so that there will be a bright clean surface; then apply thereon the compound with an ordinary varnish-brush. The letters, figures, or ornaments are then marked or cut out in the ordinary way among painters, and smalted, flocked, painted, or otherwise coated over, leaving the lettering, figures, or ornaments a bright gold color, producing the effect of gold bronze or leaf; which is found to be very durable, and not effected in its luster by the action of the weather.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.The gilt compound, consisting of the ingredients, and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l
