Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM A. WILEY, OF ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMPOUNDS FOR GRAINING WOOD.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,943, dated September 4, 1877 application filed June 23, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WILEY, of Rochester, in the county of Olmsted and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wood Graining Gompounds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. 1
The nature of my invention consists in a compound for graining wood, and in the method of applying the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In my process for graining wood, I first make a compound of cider-vinegar, tincture of squills, and acetic acid, in suitable proportions. Into this compound is dipped a sponge, or a sponge is made slightly wet with such compound, and the sponge is then touched to drypaint, ofany desired color and quality. This is then rubbed over the articles to be operated on. Common putty, and oil enough to soften it, are then mixed together, and worked till it is fine and even, and then rolled into a roll of suitable size. The oil and putty should be of such proportions, and worked sufficiently, so that it will not stick to the fingers.
With this putty-roll any desired design may then be made upon the article previously prepared by the above compound.
This is a very simple and inexpensive method of graining wood in any desired figures or design. It may be made in imitation of wallpaper, or in any other manner that fancy or taste may dictate.
The proportions of the ingredients of the compound are not necessary to give, as they may anyhow be varied in any desired manner, according to the kind and quality of dry paint to be used and the wood to be operated upon, and the quality of work intended to be done.
WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The compound, herein described, for preparing wood for graining, consisting of cidervinegar, tincture of squills, and acetic acid, and applied with dry paint, as herein set forth.
2. The method of graining Wood, herein de scribed, by wetting a sponge with a compound of cider-vinegar, tincture of squills, and acetic acid, touching the same to dry paint, and rubbing it over the surface to be operated on,and then applying a roll of putty worked with oil, substantially as herein setforthu In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM ALFRED WILEY.
