Description
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ANDREW G. PAUL, OF BOSTON, AND JOHN H. HOUSE, OF SOMERVILLE,
MASSACHUSETTS.
DECO RATING GLASS, 86C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 258,108, dated May 16, 1882. Application filed September 12, 1851. (Specimens) To all whom, 'z't'may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDREW Gr. PAUL, a citizen of the United-States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, and JOHN H. House, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, havejointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decorating Glass or other Transparent Substances; and we do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification.
This invention relates to improvements in decorating glass or other transparent substances, and it is carried out as follows:
To the rearside of the glass, orthe inside of itif the articles that are to be decorated are of a cylindrical or hollow nature, we apply a. coating of varnish, gum,or other suitable adhesive substance, which we allow to set until it becomes sufficiently sticky to serve as an adhesion between the glass and the material or materials which 'we afterward employ for decorating the rear or inside of the glass. The materials which we employ for this purpose are powdered metals, such as chips or filings, or
metal foils of any kind, ground ores or metal-- lie powders of any kind, powdered earths of any kind, or silicious substances, powdered glass, and powdered sands of any kind. These ingredients weapply, either singly or combined in suitable proportions, to the adhesive substance previously applied to the glass, according to the desired color or effect desired to be produced, and by means of said ingredients,
low or otherwise.
Having thus fully described our invention, we wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim 1. The within-described process of decorating glass, the same consisting in applying to the rear or inner surface of the glass, through the medium of an adhesive coating, a uniform backing of the within-described powdered or fragmentary mineral substances, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The process herein described of decorating glass, the same consisting in applying uniformly throughout the rear or inner surface of the glass, through the medium ofa coating of adhesive substance, a backing of mineralsubstances, consisting essentially of powdered or fragmentary metallic chips or filings, silicious substances, glass, and sand, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our si,g natures in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW G. PAUL.
JOHN H. ROUSE.
