Description

UNITED STATES P TENT OFFICE.
LUKE IV. OSBORN, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN F. WILCOX AND JOHN R. MCKAY, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
PAINTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,087, dated April '7, 1891.
Application filed July 8, 1890. Serial No. 358,081. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUKE W. OSBORN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of J oliet, in Will county, and State of Illi- 5 nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Painting; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to paint or coat the surface of wood, iron, or other material by the process which is set forth and explained in the following specification and claim. p
The surface of the material to be painted or coated is first covered with a flaxseed mucilage, applied like ordinary paint, and when dry said sized surface is covered with a mixture of rosin, turpentine, and linseed-oil, said ingredients being in the following proportions, viz: rosin, ninety-three parts; turpentine, five parts, and linseed-oil, two parts, the same to be heated until the rosin is melted and then thoroughly mixed and applied in the same manner as ordinary paint. After applying such mixture to the sized surface, and while the last-applied mixture is in a green state, I dust the same over with powdered specular hematite iron ore, which adheres to said 0 painted surface, and, as said mixture dries holds fast the said ore, thus making a very durable and ornamental coating or paint for fences, buildings, or other exposed surfaces, where such ornamental coating or paint is necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows, to wit: I
The process of painting or coating the sur o face of wood or other material, which consists in sizing the surface to be painted or coated with fiaxseed mucilage, and when dry applying to said sized surface a mixture of. rosin, turpentine, and linseed-oil, combined in the 5 proportions set forth, and then dusting the same while in a green state with powdered specular hematite iron ore, all substantially as described.
LUKE \V. OSBORN.
