Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. HOLLEN, OF LANSINGBURG, NE? YORK.
MIXED PAINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No,341,576, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed February 17, 1856. Serial No. W144i. (Np specimens.)
To all whom it ntcty concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. HOLLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented anew and useful composition to be used as a liquid filler and finisher for filling and impregnating the pores or surface interstices of fine dressed hard woods used for interior and exterior building and decorative purposes, and for articles of domestic and ofiice furniture, wainscoting, dados, and panels, and for finishing and developing the grain of such woods on the surfaces thereof, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the following ingredients combined, preferably, in the proportions stated, viz: bleached gum-shellac, three pounds; corn starch, one pound; pulverized magnesia, one-halfpound; pulverized steatite, one-half pound; alcohol, one and one-half gallon.
This composition is prepared for use by first cutting or dissolving the gum-shellac in the alcohol, then adding the corn-starch, pul-' verized magnesia, and pulverized steatite into the mixture in the order named, and thoroughly agitating the whole over a slow fire until a liquid is formed of a consistence to flow freely and spread evenly on and penetrate readily the surface of the wood to be treated, when applied by means of an ordinary varnish-brush.
In using and applying the above-named com position in practice the following method is preferably to be observed: Spread the liquid filler and finisher overthe surface of the wood or wood-work to be filled and impregnated in the same manner as varnish is appied with a varnish-brush; then allow the work to stand from four to five hours until the liquid filler and finisher shall have become thoroughly set and impregnated into the pores and interstices of the surface grain of the wood; then, when the work has become set, sand-paper it slightly, and finish with one coat of varnish The utility and novelty of my invention is that by the use of the above-named compositionliquid filler and finisher-the surface-interstices of the woods to be treated are thoroughly and expeditiously filled and impreg the like are brought out more clearly and fully to the eye, and the general effect of the work is heightened and beautified.
By the omission of the pulverized steatite in the above com position the liquid forms a finish of itself without the oil or varnish finish; but in such case requires two or more coats or applications to form a smooth polished surface on the woods or work.
I am aware that painters, decorators, and woodfinishers have heretofore used compositions consisting of two or more of the abovenamed ingredients, omitting some one or more of the others, to form a viscid glutinous paste for the purpose of filling or stuffing the pores and surface-interstices of fine, dressed, hard woods as a foundation to receive an additional finish, which paste is required to be slowly and laboriously rubbed in and upon the surfaces of such woods by means of cloths or with the bare hands, and requiring afterward to be slowly and laboriously scraped off and smoothed to remove the inequalities of the paste; but I am not aware that all of the ingredients ofmy composition in the proportions stated or otherwise have been used together to form a liquid, so as to be applied by means of a brush, and to flow freely and to impregnate equally and thoroughly the interstices on the surfaces of such woods as described, and to bring out and develop the grain thereof in a quick and labor-saving manner.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is 1 The herein-described wood filler and finisher, consisting of bleached guurshellac, cornstarch, pulverized magnesia, pulverized steatite, and alcohol, combined in about the proportions herein specified.
JAMES H. HoLLEN.
