mechanism which can be readily applied to members to be locked, and which will securely hold the members in locked position and will prevent rattling o t such members and of the lock parts.
On the accompanying drawings the above and other features oi' the invention are illustrated.` In the drawings- Figure 1 is a front view of the door lock applied to two members'to he locked together,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on plane 2-2, Fig. l,
Fig. 3 is a rear View of the locking bar,
Fig. 4 is a front view of the plate to which the locking bar is hinged,
Fig. 5 is a front view ot the latch lug supporting plate,
F ig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view on plane 6-6, Fig. 2, and
Fig, l is a perspective view oi the lock cylinder.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the parts a and Z) may be two hinged doors or only one of the meinbers may he a door and the other a tramepart, and c represents a stop vtor the door or doors. On one ot the parts, aY plate 10 is secured as by screws 11 and has at its outer end the transverse hinge lug 12 to which one end of the locking har B is pivoted by the pin 13. This locking har is preferably formed ot sheet metal comprising` the top 11, the outer end flange 15, and the side flanges 16 and 17, the hinge pin 13 passing through the inner end flange of the side flanges 16 and 17. Secured to the other part Z) as by means of screws 18 is a plate 19 which has the latch lug 2O riveted or otherwise secured thereto and provided with the transverse latch notch 21 in its outer side. At the outer end of the locking har a latch plate 22 is held against the topof the bar by pins 23 and 24 which extend transversely between and are secured in the side flanges 16 and 17. The front end 25 ot the latch plate deilects rearwardly and between this end 'and the end 15 of the locking bar isinterposed a compression spring 26 which tends to hold the latch' plate inwardly with its deflected end 25 against the pin 24. This latch plate has the rectangular hole 27 therethrough whose outer edge is ot reduced thickness to form a latch tongue 28 tor engaging in the latch notch 21 o'f the latch lug 2O when the latch plate is held inwardly by the spring 26. Rigidly secured against the outer tace oi the locking bar at its swinging end is a knob 29 having the cylindrical chamber 30 therein and through the top of the knob eX- tends the key slot 31 for receiving a key c, the slot having the central circular enlargement 32 in which the neck n oi' the key may turn. ln the chamber k80 is the cylinder 33 which has the dianietral slot 3i extending longitudinally therethrough from the top to within a short distance :trom the bottom, this slot being adapted to register with the key slot 31 to permit insertion of the key into the cylinder. Extending eccentrically from the lower end o'f the cylinder is the pin 35 which projects into the transversely elongated hole 36 through the latch plate so that when the cylinder is turned with the key the latch plate will be shifted forwardly against the force of spring 26 to release the latch tongue 28 from the latch notch 21. l/Vhen the locking bar is swung from open position against the members a and b to be locked together, the latch tongue 28, whose lower edge is beveled, will slide past the rounded upper edge ot the latch lug and the latch lug will he shifted outwardly until the tongue comes into registration with the latch notch .21 whereupon the latch plate will be shifted inwardly7 by the spring 26 to carry the latch tongue into the latch notch and to lock the locking bar to the plate 19 which is secured to the member 7o. To unlock the bar, the key is inserted through the key-hole into the cylinder and then when the key is turned, the cylinder will turn therewith and the pin 35 engaging in the hole 36 will swing the latch plate outwardly to release the hitch tongue from the notch and the locking bar can be swung into position at perpendicular with the member o and the door 0r doors are free to be opened. It will be noted that unless the locking bar is fully forced down andthe latch plate moved suiiiciently inwardly to permit full entrance of the latch tongue in the latch notch, the cylinder will not rotate sufficiently to bring its slot Q9 in coincidence with the key slot 31, and the key can then be neither inserted nor withdrawn. This insures accurate and complete locking.
The cylinders of different locks may have slots of different depth or the bottoms of the slots may have different shapes so that different keys will be required to open different locks. In the construction shown, the bottom of the cylinder slot 33 has the conical lridge 37 to receive the conical notch o in the end of the key. Instead of this, the base of the cylinder may have a diiferent shape so that only a key with a corresponding end can be inserted to operate the lock. Theslots of the cylinders may also be of different depth so that` only keys of corre- Sponding length can be effectively used. It is evident that more elaborate key and tumbler mechanism may be used, as for example, cylinder tumbler cylinders and keys.
In order to insure tight closure of the parts a and Z) if these parts are doors, a leaf Vspring 3S is secured against the inner side of the lock bar top 14 to engage and press at its ends against the plates 10 and 19 when the locking bar is closed in order to firmly press and hold the members a and b against the stop c. If the parta is a stationary frame and the part Z) the door, then a spring may be provided for engaging only lagainst the plate 19. Such spring will also serve to automatically swing out the locking bar when the key is turned to release the latch plate from the latch lug, and then the bar can be readily grasped and swung the full distance to permit opening` of the door or doors. The spring also serves to make the lock rigid when closed and to prevent rattling or vibration thereof, irrespective of any wearlof the latching members or loosetess thereof.
The lock mechanism which I' have described is of simple, inexpensive construction, yet very efficient. The locking bar body 14 confines and protects the latching parts whether the bar is in open or closed position,
and there being a special key for each lock, opening of the lock is impossible without the right key. Although the lock may be used in a great many ways it is particularly adaptable for locking the doors of commercial vehicles. v
I do not, of course, desire to be limited to the exact construction, arrangement and operation disclosed as changes and modifications are no doubt possible which would still come within the scope of the invention.
