Description

SAMUEL W. PNGREE.
Gas Burner.
,No 125,327, Patented April2,872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of4 Letters Patent No. 125,327, dated April 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. PINGREE, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description th ereof, which will en able those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my gasburner. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fi g. 3 is a horizontal section of the same i-n the plane a' w, Fig. l.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a gas-burner having fastened to its tip a semicircular plate provided with a curved flange, which fits the circumference of the burner, in combination with a rivet passing transversely through the body of the burner and through the gas-channel in such a ma nner that by the rivet the circular plate is held rml yin position over the gas jet or jets ofthe burner, and that the gas on issuing from said jet or jets is spread by the plate,
and its illuminating power is materially increased. 'lhe rivet passing through the gaschannel assists in spreading the gas before it issues from the gas-jets of the burner.
In the drawing, theletter A designates a gasburner, to the tip of which is secured a semicircular plate, a, which is provided with a concave flange, b, fitting the circumference of the burner, and with two arms, c c, which can be made to embrace the burner, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Through the ange b and through the body of the burner extends a rivet, d, which serves to retain the plate c firmly and securely in position, said plate being so situated that the gas issuing from the jet or jets of the burner abats against the saine and spreads it, so that it is brought in contact with an increased quantity of oxygen, and thereby the illuminating power of the gas is materially facilitated. In order to obtain the best effect, it is necessary that the plate c shall be precisely in the correct position, and I therefore use a rivet, d, to hold the said plate firmly in place, thereby eifeetually preventing its displacement. Before drilling the hole for the reception of the rivet d, the plate a is adjusted on the burner in the proper position by means of the arms c c, which retain said plate with sufficient tenacity to allow of drilling the hole in the proper place. I also find that the rivet which passes through the gas-channel of the burner assists in spreading the gas before the same :issues from the burner, and therefore the rivet forms an effective part of my device. It must be remarked that my improve-ment is applicable to gas-burners of any construction, such as bat-wings or fish-tails.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The semicircular plate a., provided with a concave flange, b, attached to the burner A by means of a rivet, d, passing through the gas-channel, substantially as shown and described. y
. 2. Also, the clampingarms c c, in combination with the plate c, concave tlange b, burner A, and rivet d, substantially as set forth.
