Specification of Letters Patent,
. Applicatioh filed December 3, 1915. Serial No. 84,833.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANoEm Pn'rnr, sub
ork, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Cocks and the like, of which the following is a specification. it
This invention relates to gas cocks and the like and has as its object to provide means for locking such cocks in their closed position in order to prevent their being accidentally opened, as is often the case espe' cially in gas stoves and, ranges, where an animal jumping on the handle or key of the cook, or a piece of garment brushing by, or a child playing with the cock may open it,
, precipitating accidents or, in. the best case,
causing awaste of gas.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts, more specifically described hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a gas cock such as ordina rily usedfor stoves and kitchen ranges,provicled with my device;
Fig. 2 a partly sectional, partly elevational view thereof. the section being taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a similar view, the section being taken on line 3-3 of/Fig. 1. and some parts being broken away; y
Referring more particularly to the drawing, in which like reference characters are applied to similar parts throughout the several views, 7 is a gas cook such as is ordinarily used on gas stoves and ranges. A
cavityis formed in Fhe plug 9 of the cock. Pivotcd on a pin 10, a. lever 11 is mounted in the cavity 8 and is normally held in the position indicated in full lines in Fig. 1, by a plate spring 12 secured to it at its lower end. A lug 13 is alSO carried by the lower end of the lever 11 and projects, through a hole14 made in the plug 9, into a recess 15 formed in the socket 16. This locks the plug in the socket in the closed position of the cock, shown in Fig. 1, and a similar recess formed at a quarter turn distance from the recess 15, in the socket, when engaged by l the lug 13 would lock the cock in its open position.
kect of the King of Italy, residing at New A red 17 passes through the hollow hantlle 18 of the cock 7, its inner end,.pr0jecting into the cavity 8, being enlarged as at 19 to prevent its being withdrawn and abuttin against the upper end of the lever 11. A knob 20 is mounted on the outer endof the rod 17, normally a slight distanceaway from the end of the handle 18, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, but susceptible of being pressed into contact therewitlnas indicated in dotted lines, whereupon the lever 11 will be tilted on its pivot and withdraw the lug 13 from engagement with the recess 15, all as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that while I have thus shown and described the preferred forms of embodiment of my invention, I do not want to be limited to its mechanical de-' nation, a socket. a plug rotatably mounted therein. means adapted to lock said plug in said socket from rotation, a handle operatively connected to said plug, at right anglcs thereto, a push-rod slidably mounted in said handle and-a lever pivotally mounted in said plug, adapted to be engaged by said push rod and to operate said locking means, su'hsta'ntiallv' as and for the purpose set forth.
Patented J an. 8, 1918.
sis
2. A cock or faucet comprising,,incombination, a socket, a'plug rotatably mounted therein, means dapted to lock said plug in said socket from rotation, a handle operatively connected to said plug, atright angles thereto, a push-rod slidably mounted in said handle and a lever pivotally mounted in said plug, adapted to be operated by said push rod and to operate said locking means.
In testimonv whereof, I atlix mysignature in the presence of two witnesses.
