HARRY YUILL AND MATHEW FAVER-O, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
COCK AND VALVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY YUILL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New Broad Street House, Lon don, England, and MATHEW FAVERO, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 109 Wardo avenue, Fulham, London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cocks and Valves, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to cocks or valves, and especially to a cock of the kind provided with a plug which has arranged in conjunction with it a lever pivoted in a recess or slot in the plug and one end of which is designed to engage, under the action of a spring in a notch in the body of the cock, while the other end extends into proximity to the handle of the cock, and is adapted to' be moved toward the said handle when the handle is grasped to move the plug. According to our invention, this lever is fitted into, and pivoted within a recess formed in the plug, and the end of the lever, which is designed to be pressed for disengaging the lever from the notch in the body, is arranged opposite to a hole or recess in the handle so that pressure upon the said lever to unlock the plug will cause it to enter the said hole or recess in the handle. With this construction it will be understood that the locking lever rojects very little beyond the surface of t 1e plug itself, so that it does not form an unsightly addition to a cock and is not so liable to be injured as when it is arranged outside the face of the plug.
In practice we prefer to provide the plug with two locking levers arranged as here- 'inbefore described and pivoted upon a common pin, the finger portions of the said levers being arranged opposite to each other so that they will press back simultaneously into the same hole in the handle. In the hole or recess in the handle the spring is arranged, which serves for causing the locking lever or levers to engage with the notch or notches when the plug is in the closed position.
To enable our invention to be fully understood we will describe the same by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a cock Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 12, 1909.

provided with two locking levers in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4c are views of the plug and the cock in positions at right angles to each other, Fig. 3 being partly in section. Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a side view and an'underside view of the locking lever.
a indicates the body of the cock, and b the plug which is provided with the handle 0, d, d are the locking levers arranged in ac cordance with our invention, the said levers being arranged in a slot 6 in the plug, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and mounted upon a common pivot pin f passing through the axis of the plug the oint portions 9 of the two levers being halved, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. To allow of mounting them in this manner these levers are at their locking ends adapted to engage in notches h, h formed in the flange 2' on the body of the cock, and at their other ends are enlarged as at j to form finger or gripping pieces to allowthe levers being readily depressed, the said enlarged ends being arranged over the slot Z in the handle, and adapted when pressed together to be moved back into the said slot, while at the same time the locking ends are disengaged from the notches h, h. In the recess Z between the gripping pieces j, j a spring m is introduced, the said spring normally serving to press the gripping pieces outward and the locking ends toward one another so that when the plug is turned and the locking ends are opposite the notches h, h, the said looking ends will spring into the notches and lock the plug. It will be noticed that by mounting both levers cl, d on a common pin the external surfaces of the said levers may be shaped so as to correspond with the shape of the neck of the plug, while at the same time leaving enough substance to give the necessary strength and rigidity to the levers.
Although we have described a cock provided with two levers it will be obvious that a single lever may be employed if desired.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is In a cock plug, the combination with the plug, of a pair of levers mounted upon a common pivot and located in recesses in the plug, the said levers at one end being so constructed as to engage With notches in the cock casing and at the other end shaped to 5 push back into a recess in the handle of the plug, the said levers having a spring arranged between the ends to be pressed, and having their external surfaces shaped to correspond With the external shape of the neck of the plug.
