METAL FISH-BASKET.
Patented Jan. 8, 1918.
Application filed January 10, me. Serial No. 71,345.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Huco THORN- BLADE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Seattle, county of King, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ltletalFish-Baskcts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in baskets, constructed of metallic bars,
such, for instance, asare used in the ban dling and treating'of fish.
The object of my invention is to construct a basket along these lines in such manner that it will have superior strength anddurability, as compared with baskets of this type constructed in the ordinary manner. The particular features of which my invention consists will be hereinafter set forth in the specificatiom'and particularly defined in the claims;
1n the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention in the form which is now most preferred by me.
Figure-.1 shows 'in perspective a basket constructed in accordance with my invention.-
Fig.2 is. a transverse sectional elevation of the same basket.
The basket here shown is one which is composed of a series of flat bars of iron, bent so that each bar extends across the bottom of the basket and to each opposite side. Two sets of such bars are used, these extending at right angle and together form a grill work. Each bar has a section which is comprised within the bottom of the basket, and two end sections which are comprised within the sides of the basket. The bars 1 in the basket illustrated extend across the shorter dimension of the basket, while the bars 2 extend the longer dimension of the basket.
There is no interweaving of these bars but they are secured to each other in proper position by welding at their point of crossing, this welding being most economically and perfectly performed by the use of an electric welder.
Horizontal bars 3 extend about the sides of the basket, and are similarly joined at their meeting ends and at their point of intersection with the bars 1 and 2 by welding. Each of the bars 1 and 2 at its upper end is offset as shown at 12, this olfset being sutlicient to form a shoulder upon which rests the lower edge of the binding bar 4, which extends around the brim of the basket. This binding bar is also secured to the bars 1 and 2 by being electrically welded thereto.
ing it only through the welded joint, in consequence the basket is stronger because of thi feature, and better able to support heavy weights without loosening the welded joints. 1
The bars 1 which extend across the basket in the direction of its shorter dimension are all entirely within the bars to which they are secured, with the exception of the binding bar 4, in such cases where this binding bar is placed at the inner side of the vertical sections of the outer bars. It is of course understood that the binding bar 4 might be placed without the vertical sections of these bars if desired, in which case the offset 12 would be in opposite direction from that shown. The bars 2 which extend lengthwise the basket, areoutside of or across the transverse bars 1, and inside of the horizontal side bars 3. A basket of this construction may be made more cheaply than when the basket is riveted, and at the same time the joints will be stronger and less liable to rust, furthermore baskets for handling fish are subjected to the action of salt, which gets under the heads of the rivets and eventually loosens the joint. This could not act to loosen a Welded joint.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A basket composed of bars forming a metallic grill, the vertical bars of the sides being bent to form laterally off-set sections at their ends, and a binding bar extending 2. A basket composed of bars forming a the vertical bars throughout the entire pemetallic grill, the vertical bars at the sides riphery, the crossing points of the bars bebeing bent to form laterally oflset sections ing secured by welding. 1
at theirends, a binding bar extending about Signed at Seattle, Washington this 21st 5 the brim with 'its lower edge bearing upon day of December 1915. d
the shoulders formed by said offsets, and the horizontal bars at the sides being outside of CARL HUGO THORNBLADE.
