COLLAP$IBLE RECEPTACLE.
Application filed December 16, 1916.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE Mnssrnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved folding box and the principal object of the invention is to provide a folding box having improved means for hingedly connecting the forward and rear side walls of the box with the end walls at diagonally opposite corners of the box so that the box may be collapsed into a flat compact mass with the bottom which is hinged to the rear side Wall swung upwardly against the rear wall and the .cover swung back against the outer face of the rear wall and a securing chain for the cover connected with an eye carried by one of the end walls to hold the box in the collapsed position.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this box that the bottom when swung downwardly will be supported upon ledges carried by the end walls and serve to retain the box in the set-up position, the cover being swung down flat upon the upper edges of the end walls and between the forward and rear walls and releasably held in a closed position by the chain engaging an eye carried by the forward wall.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this box that it will be very strong and durable.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved box in a set-up position,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved box in a collapsed position,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the box taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the, box taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the collapsed box taken along the line 66 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 137,413.
through the collapsed box taken along the line 7-7 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 88 of Fig. 3, and,
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 9-9 of Fig. 3.
This box is provided with end walls 10 and 11, a forward wall 12, a rear wall 13, a bottom 14, and a top 15. The rear wall carries hinges 16 so that the bottom 14 may be hingedly mounted within the box or receptacle and moved from the position shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 to that shown in Figs. 2, 6 and 7. It should be noted that when in the set-up position, the bottom is lowered and rests upon the supporting ledges 17 carried by the end walls 10 and,
11 and when in this position serves to retain thev box in the rectangular shape as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The end walls 10 and 11 are connected with the rear wall by hinges and are also connected with the forward wall by hinges, these hinges being designated by the numerals 18 and 19 with the hinges 18 positioned outside the box and the hinges 19 within the box. It should be further noted that these hinges 19 are so constructed that they will be provided with outstanding cars 19' to hold the end wall 10 and forward wall 12 spaced above the end wall 11 and rear wall 13 when the receptacle is folded and thus provide ample room for the bottom 14. The end portions of the side and end walls connected by the hinges 19 are cut square and meet as shown in Fig. 5 with the ends of the walls 10 and 11 abutting against the inner faces of the forward and rear walls and the ends of the walls connected by the hinges 18 are cut at at incline and meet with the beveled ends abutting thus providing a receptacle having tight corners free from leakage.
The cover which is hingedly connected with the rear wall by hinges 20 is provided with a securing chain 21 connected with the outer face of the cover by means of an eye 22 and when the box is in a set-up position engaging the eye or staple 23 carried by the forward wall 12 and when in the collapsed position engaging the eye or staple 24 carried by the side wall 10. It will thus be seen that with this construction, the box may be set up as shown in Fig. 1 with the bottom fitting into the box and resting upon the supporting ledges 17 and the cover held in a closed position by means of the chain 21, a suitable lock or seal being passed through the eye 23 if desired. It will be further seen that when the box is collapsed, the bottom will be swung upwardly and the cover rearwardly against the rear wall and the forward wall and end walls then moved longitudinally of the rear wall to the position shown in Fig. 2 and thechain connected with the eye 24 and held thereon by a securing wire or by any other suitable securing device. 7
What is claimed is A collapsible receptacle comprising a forward wall, a rear wall, end walls, a cover hingedly connected with the rear wall and resting against the outer face of the rear wall when in an open position, a bottom hingedly connected with the rear wall and when swung downwardly within the receptacle engaging the walls to hold therecep- 'tacle in a set-up position, the bottom being swung up against the inner face of the rear wall when in a collapsed position, outer hinges connecting the forward and rear walls with the end walls, inner hinges connecting the forward and rear walls with the end walls and holding the walls in spaced relation when the receptacle is collasped, and a securing chain connected with said cover and engaging an eye carried by the forward wall when the receptacle is in a setup position to hold the cover closed and engaging an eye carried by one of said end walls when the receptacle is in a collapsed position to retain the receptacle in a collapsed position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
