UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
coittnINnTIom Application filed November 27, 1 917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT L. OSBORN, a
citizen of the United States of America, res
Siding at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CombinationTrunlrs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. l
This invention relates to combination trunk and has for its object the production of a simple and eiiicient trunk which may be conveniently carried ipon an automobile or other vehicle, and which may be readily con verted into a table.
Another object {of this invention is the production of a simple and eflic-ient hinge structu-re, used in connection with the folding sides of the trunk, whereby the folding sides may be thoroughly braced when the same are extended relation.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

tion thereof in section, and bracing hinge being. shown in an extended position. i
Fig. 13 is a vertical section through one of the bracing legs, showing the ineans of eonnecting the same to one of the outer leaves of the table, which forth a part of the trunk.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the trunk, which; comprises a front side-2, and a bottom 3, the corners thereof being bracedby means of the metallic bracing strips 45 The bottom is provided with a longitudinally extending rail 5 across the front theneof, nd a primary leaf 6 is hingcclly ponnect'ed to this rai1 5 by means of a hinge'f. A secondary leaf 8 is connected to the outer edge of the leaf 6 by means of the specially constructed hinges 9, wbiohw-ill be hereinafter fully described. The adjoining edges 1.0;of the primary and secondary leaves 6 and 8 are beveled, as indicated clearly in Fig. 4: to oermit the primary and secondary leaves to efolcled at right angles to each other. The intermediate leaf 11 ,is hingedly se; cured at its outer-edge to the outer edge of y the secondary leaf 9, and an outer leaf is in turn hingedly secured to the edge. of y r V M The abutting edges of the leaves 11 and 12 are beveled as indicated by the numeral 13 in Fig. 4, in order to permit the leaves to be folded at right angles to each other. The primary and secondary leavesG and 8 are reinforced at the edges thereof, by suitable reinforcing straps and the intermediate an outer leaves 11 and 12 are provided with inwardly extending flanges 15 formed upon the sides of the leaves in order to overhang the body of the tr-link, when the device is in afolded position, asis clearly indicated in Fig. The flange 15 are braced by means of the toggle links 16, at their junctions between the intermediate and outerleaves 11 This structure is clearly ilnstrated in +ig. f he dra i gs a A pair of supporting legs 17 are hingedly secured to the intermediate leaf 11, by means of the hinges 18, and these bracing legs 17 are provided with adjustable ends 19 carrying locking straps 20, which are adapted to hold the adjustable ends in a fixed position, in order to permit the legs to support the leaves in a proper extended position, should the table be set up upon an uneven surface.
A pair of suitable legs 20 are carried by the 110 outer leaf 12, and are secured to the under face of the outer leaf 12, by means of suitable hinges 21. These legs 20 are adjusted in a manner similar to that described with respect to the legs 17. These legs 17 and 20 are adapted to be swung at right angles tothe leaves 11 and 12, in order to constitute an eflicient support therefor. When the device is used as a trunk or packing case, these legs 17 and 20 are adapted to be folded down upon the inner face of the leaves 11 and 12, as shown in Fig. 4 and to be held firmly in this folded position by means of the latching bar 22, which latching bar 22 is pivotally connected to a wire frame 23 at one end, and has its opposite end fitting under a spring hook 24: of the frame 23. This frame 23 is provided with suitable looped-portions 25 for facilitating the attachment of the frame 23 to the under face of the leaves 11 and 12.
By carefully considering especially Figs. 11 and 12 it will be'seen that a specially constructed hinge 9 is employed for constituting a brace for the primary and secondary leaves 6 and 8, while the same are in an extended position.
This specially constructed hinge 9 comprises a pair of primary leaves 26, which are secured to the leaves 6 and 8 and are also hingedly connected together at their inner ends. A bracing leaf 27 is hinged along its longitudinal edge to each primary leaf 26 of the hinge, and the abutting ends of the bracing leaves 20 are hinged together. It should be understood that the hinge may be folded flat upon the primary and secondary leaves 6 and 8 of the trunk,-in order to per mit these leaves 6 and 8 to extend at right angles to. each other. However, when the device is used as a table the bracing leaves 27 may be swung at right angles to the table leaves 6 and 8 as shown in detail at Fig. 12, and thereby constituting a suflicient brace and holding the primary and secondary leaves 6 and 8 in parallel relation with respect to each other. By means of the specially constructed hinge 9, as above described a very eflicient bracing means has been produced, as is clearly illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 for holding the leaves of the trunk in an extended position for presenting a flat top,
- to be used as a table.
From the foregoing description, it wil be seen that a very simple and efiicient foldable box or trunk has been produced, which is especially adapted for use by tourists and the like, wherein the trunk may be used not only as a receptacle for storing, or conveying articles, but may also be readily converted into a table, when extended as above described.
It should, of course, be understood, that suitable detail mechanical changes may be made in connection with the present device, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. In a combination trunk of the class described, the combination with a body-structure having an open top, an open front, and a non-open back, of a plurality of leaves hingedly connected together and one hingedly secured to the upper portion of said back, said leaves adapted to be folded upon the body-structure to close said open top and front to produce a complete box, part of said leaves resting under the other leaves when folded, all of the leaves adapted to be unfolded for producing a table, and legs for said leaves when in said table forming position, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a combination trunk of the class described, the combination with a bodystructure having an open top, an open front, and a non-open back, of primary and secondary leaves hingedly connected together and an intermediate leaf and an outer leaf hingedly connected together, said intermediate leaf being hingedly connected to said secondary leaf, said primary leaf hingedly connected to the back of said body-structure, said leaves adapted to be folded upon the body-structure for closing the top and front for producing a complete box or trunk, bracing means interposed between said outer and intermediate leaves for holding the same in a parallel position, and adjustable legs hingedly secured to the inner face of said intermediate and outer leaves and capable of being swung at right angles thereto for constituting a sulficient support therefor.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
HERBERT L. OSBORN.
