C. A. BAIER & C. E. MERRITT.
REINFORCED CONCRETE FORM.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. s. 1916.

. E. INVENTORS.
\ WITNESSES CHARLES A. BAIER AND CHARLES E. MERRITT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
REINFORCED CONCRETE-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 6, 1916. Serial No. 82,373.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES A. BAIER and CHARLES E. MERRrr'r, citizens of the United States, and residents of Kansas City,
in the county of Jackson and State of Misthe provision of a form which may be readily, efi'ectively and conveniently tightened and sustained thereby against expansion against the strain of the material.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent in the following. detail description with reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation view of a form showing the tightening means applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an end View of the form, showing the tightening means applied theretopFig. 3 is a sectional view, taken on the line 33 Fig.1; Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the tighteners employed; Fig. 5 is a sectional view of another tightener employed, taken on the line ;55 Fig. 6; and Fig. 6 is an end view of the fastener shown in Fig. 5.
Corresponding and like parts are referred toin the following-description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
, Let the numeral 5 designate a rectangular form in its entirety, the same being composed of wood sides 6, 7, 8 and 9, whichform. a hollow in WlllCh the material is placed for molding. These sides may, however, be. composed of any kind of material, and it is not necessary that they should be composed of wood. Transverse members 10 and 12 are respectively secured to the sides 6 and8, said members projecting beyond said sides, as shown at 13, while the sides 7 and 9 are provided with similar transverse members 14 and 15 secured respectively to said sides and projecting beyond the latter, as shown at 16. -Metallic bands 17 are passed around the form and their extremities respectively connected with spindles 18 and 19, which are journaled in channel blocks 20, the extremities of said bands being connected with said spindles 18 and 19 by inserting said extremities in recesses formed in said spindles, as shown at 21. The opposite extremities of the spindles 18 and 19 are rectangular inshape for engagement by a wrench, by means of which wrench, the spindles maybe revolved for Winding the bands thereon and thus tightenin the latter around the form 5. The spindles 18 and 19 project beyond the opposite sides of the channel blocks 20 and are provided with openings 22 therethrough on opposite sides of the channel blocks 20, through which openings, pins 23 may be inserted and engaged in the form 5 for preventing reverse rotation of the spindles 18 and 19 after the bands 17 have been tightened. These pins 23 may be either projected into the form 5, as shown at 24, or merely rest against the latter in positions at angles to the vertical position shown in Fig. 6.
The extremities of the- transverse members 10 and 12, and 14 and 15 are connected by means of cables 25, loop shaped and its extremities connected with spindles 26, journaled in the sides of channel blocks 27, said blocks being set on the projecting extremlties of the beams 12, 10, 14 or 15, as the case may be. The spindles 26 project beyond the sides of the channel blocks 27, and the extremities of the cables 25 are connected with said projecting portions of said spindles 26 by being inserted in openings 28 in said spindles. The extremities of the spindles 26 are rectangular shaped for engagement therewith of a wrench for revolving said spindles to cause the cable 25 to be wound thereon. The tightening of these cables 25 in this manner, causes the transverse members 10, 12, 14 and 15 to be respectively drawn. toward each other and thereby prevent expansion of the sides of the form 5 under the influence of the pressure of the mortar within the form. After the cables 25 have been sufficiently tightened, 1n the manner above described, pins 29 are inserted through openings 30 in the spindle 26, the said pins being extended into recesses 31 of the channel blocks for locking the spindles 26 against revolving in the reverse direction. It is not necessary however that these pins 29 should be inserted in the recesses 31, as one extremity of the said pins may be engaged with the channel blocks 27 and thereby prevent'the said spindles from revolving n .form of the invention,
the reverse direction under the influence of the tension of the cables 25.
It will readily be understood that the invention is susceptible of variations in form ent is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising side members transverse members secured to opposite side members of said device and projecting beyond saidside members, channel blocks set on the projecting extremities of one of said transverse mem-' bers, flexible loop members receiving the projecting extremities of the other transverse member, and a winding s indle journaled in each of said channel bloc s with which said flexible loop members are connected.
2. A device of the class described, comprising side form members, transverse members secured to opposite side form members and projecting at their extremities beyond said side form members, channel blocks set on the projecting extremities of-one of said transverse members, flexible loop members receiving the projecting extremities of the other transverse member, a winding spindle j ournaled in each of said channel blocks and projecting at their extremities beyond the sides .of said channel blocks, the said loop members being connected with the projecting extremities of said winding spindles,
said winding spindles having openings therein between the sides of said channel blocks, and pins adapted to be inserted between the sides of said channel blocks through said openings. J
In testimony whereof, we aflixour signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
