Description

-EDWARD WELLS'.
Improvement in Hinges for Carriage-Doorsl N0. 125,236. I P atentedAprl2,1872.
UNITED STATEs PATENT CEEICE.
EDWARD WELLS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
- IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES FOR CARRIAGE-DOORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,236, dated April 2, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WELLs, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Hinge for Carriage-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full7 clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure 1, a side view closed; Fig. 2, a top view closed; and in Fig. 3, a section on line w, the parts in position as open.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of hinges used for hanging carriage-doors, commonly termed concealed hinges,77 from the fact that when the door is closed they are hidden from view. The object of this invention is the construction of a hinge so that the -door may be easily detached or replaced Wllen occasion requires, and without removing either part from the post or door; and the invention consists in the post and door plates, one constructed with a pivoted arm, the other with a segment having a sleeve formed thereon, and set onto the said pivoted arm and there secured, so that the pivot of the said arm becomes the center of motion of the swinging part.
A is the post-plate; B, the door-plate, the plate A having lugs C or similar supports extending back to receive and support the pivot D, which forms the center of motion of the hinge, this part, C, extending into the post in the usual manner. On the said. pivot D an arm, E, is arranged to swing freely'. thereon. The plate B is constructed with a segment, F7 in substantially the usual manner, and this segment provided with a sleeve, I, to set onto the said arm E, as seen in Fig. 3, and when so set is secured by a screw, a, or other suitable device, which may be a spring-latch, to avoid the necessity of a detachable part, that being the only objection to the screw.
When set together, as in Fig. 3, the hinge is complete, and the plate B turns freely on the pivot D as the door is opened or closed.
To detach the door, disconnect the device which secures the sleeve I to the arm E, and draw it therefrom, as denoted in Fig-.3, or replace it by reversing the operation.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described hinge, consisting of the plate A, to which an arm, E, is pivoted, combined with a plate, B, constructed with its segment F and sleeve I to set onto the said arm, the pivot of the said arm forming the center of motion from which the plate B is turned.
EDWARD WELLS.
