UNITED PATEN-*F OFFICE# WILLIAM JonNsroN lAND oHARLEsnAsMUssEN, or NEvvgHAvEN, coNNf HINGE FOR LANDAU-TOPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.4244,616, dated July 19, k1881.
YApplication filed June 6, 1881.
To all whom 4it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WM. JOHNSTON and GHAnLns RAsMUssnN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Hinges for Landau-Tops; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute partl of this specification, and represent, in-
-Figure 1, a perspective view; Fig. 2, a vertical central section; Fig. 3, a transverse section on line ac x,- .Fig. 4, a vertical central'section on a reduced scale, showing the hinge as open. v
This invention relates to an improvement in hinges for attaching landau-.top fronts to the front pillars. In the usual construction these hinges are made with aknulckle upon the front, necessarily exposedY when the top is raised. The object of this invention is to construct a hinge which, when applied and the top closed,4 is entirely concealed, so that at the hingingpoint nothing is seen but the simple joint between the lower or fixed part of the pillar and theY upper or swinging part; and in such a hinge this'invention consists.
4top of the stationary part of the pillar.
two parts A andB secured by screwsinto the pillar.
Beneath the plate A, and in rear of the flange B, is a pocket, C, opening through the plate A and forming a slot, D, therein.
E is a plate corresponding to the plate A, fitted to the lower endof the swinging part of 'the pillar, constructedwith .a right-angular ange, F, extending upward onto the vface of the swinging part. A
On the under side of the plate E is an arm, H, which extends through the slot D into the pocket C of the stationary part of the hinge, and is hung at the rear of the pocket by a (No model.)
pivot, I, and so that when the lupper or swinging part', E F, is turned on the pivot l it swin gs away from the plate B--that is, from its vertical position, as seen in'Fig.4, the'hinging part being something like what are known as concealed 'coach-hinges.7 y
The plates A B of one part and E F of the other, being sunk intov the wood of their-respective parts of the pillar, are hidden or entirely concealed when iiLtheir closed position, and because of theirshape-that is, extending on the ends of the pillar and on the sidesmake the strongest possible connection between the swinging and stationary parts of the pillar.
Insome cases springs are applied to aid in raising the tops-'that is, as a kind ofcounterbalance.
To provide these hinges for the attachment of the counterbalancing springs I construct the swinging part E F with an arm, L, extending downward over the face of the part B, but so that in turningthe other part that arm will pass freely over the upper end of the part B, as seen in Fig. 4. One end of the spring' is attached to the lower end of this arm L and the other to a point below, so that as the top is turned backward the spring iseXtended, resisting the falling'ot' the top to some extent; then when the top is raised the spring reacts and aids in raising.
` The arm for the spring usually been applied to some other part of the top; but the arrangement and operation of the spring are too wellknown to require any further description in this specification.
- It will be understood that the door-pillar is hinged in the usual manner for this class of falling fronts. u
We claim- A v l. The herein-described hinge for landautops, consisting ofthe ixed part composed of top plate, A, and vertical -lange B, with the pocket G, opening throughY the plate A, conn bined with the second part, composed of the plate E and vertical flange F, with an arm, H extending from the plateE into and hung within the said pocket, substantially as described. v
2. The herein-clescri-bed hinge for 'landau- Y attachment has tops, consisting of the fixed part, composed extending to or made a. part of the swinging of top plate, A, and vertical ange B, with part ofthe hinge, substantially as described.
the pocket C, opening through the plate A, WILLIAM JOHNSTON.
combined with the second part, composed of CHARLES RASMUSSEN. 5 the plate E and vertical ztnge F, with an Witnesses:
arm, H, extending from the plate E into :md J. H. SHUMWAY,
hung within the said pocket, and the arm L, L. D. ROGERS.
