C. P. DU BOIS.
WOVEN WIRE MITTEN.4 APPLICATION FILED IIAII. aI. I-9II.
Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
CLARA P. DU BOIS, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y. i
'WOVEN-WIRE MITTEN.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1917..
Application led March 31, 1917. Serial N o. 158,876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA P. DU Bois, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woven-Wire Mittens, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to hand-coverlngs or mittens, and has for its object to provide an improved hand covering to serve as a protection against heat and especially designed for use by bakers and domesti'cs for removing hot vessels from ovens without burning the hands. A further object 1s to provide improved means of additional protection near the ends of the fingers and thumb which come in direct contact with the heated vessel in grasping the same.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of the specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout theseveral views:
Figure 1 is an inner face view of a mitten or glove made substantially in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detailed plan view of the protection piece for the thumb, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through said protection piece and a portion of the thumb of the mitten, showing how said protection piece is secured thereto.
The hand-covering 1 is made of woven wire preferably in the form of a mitten having one compartment 2 to inclose all of the fingers, and another compartment 3 to inclose the thumb. The woven wire is of proper mesh to protect the hand from eX- ternal heat and prevent any part of the hand from coming in direct contact with a heated surface. In using the mitten for removing heated vessels from an oven, it is necessary to grasp the vessel between the thumb and fingers, and to protect these parts of the hand from being burned, the
inner faces of the portions 2 and 3 ofl 6, as shown in Fig. 3, which are interwoven with the wire mesh material forming the body of the mitten, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. By this means the protection pads t and 5 are firmly united to the mitten at the proper places shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The bottom or entrance of the mitten is surrounded by one or more coils 7 of resili-l ent wire connected tothe edge ofthe woven wire forming the body of the mitten, and designed to yield when the hand is inserted into the mitten and make the latter fit snugly around the wrist. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a complete handcovering made of woven wire, of pads also made of woven wire secured to the inner faces of the end portions of the parts inclosing the fingers and thumb for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a, hand-covering made of woven wire, of pads also made of woven wire and having radiating wires around their edges interwoven with the material of the hand-coverin for securing them to the portions inclosmg the fingers and thumb for the purposev specified.
3. The combination with a complete handcovering made of woven wire, of a coil of resilient wire interwoven with the edge of said wire material around the entrance of the hand-covering for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CLARA P. DU BOIS.
