Description

L SONNENFELD.
MOLDING FLASK FASTENER.
APPLlcAnoN FILED c. 4. |911.
y UNTEED STATES ATENT kJOI-IN' SONNENFELD, OF LIMA, OHIO.`
MODDING-mask rAsTnNER.
T 0 all whom t may' concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN SONNENFEL'D, formerly a citizen of Hungary, two years ago filed declaration of intention of citizenship in the United States, residence in the United States four years, second papers not issued but as soon as entitled thereto will make application for final papers and will be a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Molding-Flask Fasteners; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in flasks used for molding purposes in foundries and the like, the principal object being to provide a simple and inexpensive, yet a highly eliicient fastener for securing the upper and lower sections of the flask together so as to prevent all manner of relative movement between the two until it is required that they shall be detached.
With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a molding flask showing the application of the improved fastener;
Fig. :2 is an end elevation of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener detached.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the upper and lower sections of a common type of molding flask, said sections being commonly known as the cope and drag, respectively. It is well known, that when employing the usual flask, the cope and drag often shift relatively, so that a poor casting results. By the use of the improved fastener, however, all such difliculties are-overcome.
A rectangular plate 3 is secured by bolts or the like to the upper section or cope 1, said plate having on its outer face an integral lug l of an;1 suitable size and shape, the outer end of said lug having a pair of 4Specification of Letters Patent. *i ,'Ptentd Dec. 11, 1917. Application mea oetober 4,1917; serial N65 194,727; i
vertic'al pin 6 is formed integrally with and depends from the lug 4, the lower end of said pin being receivable in openings 7 formed in a pair of vertically spaced hori- Zontal ears 8 which extend outwardly from a vertical plate 9 suitably secured to the drag 2.
By the provision of the pin 6 and the apertured lugs 8, it will'be obvious that relative horizontal shifting of the drag and cope will be prevented, and in order that said cope may not creep upwardly when the molten metal is poured into the flask, I provide a latch lever 10 whose upper end is pivotcd at 11 between the ears 5, the lower end of said lever having a pair of integral noses l2 for reception beneath the ears 8 as shown clearly in Fig. l, said ears and noses being suitably beveledfor easy engagement. The lower end of the lever l0 is by preference curved outwardly and provided with an integral ball 13 whose weight assists in moving the lever to operative position, said ball also serving as a hand grip in releasing the device.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that although the improved fastener is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, it will be highly efficient and durable, it being understood that the fasteners may be used at numerous points on the flask, and that minor changes in the construction of the device may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
l. A fastener for the upper and lower sections of molding flasks comprising a lug extending outwardly from the upper section, a vertical pin depending rigidly from said lug, a horizontal ear extending outwardly from the lower section of the flask and having an opening receiving said pin, a latch lever pivoted to said lug at its upper end, and a nose on said lever for reception beneath said ear to prevent withdrawal of said pin.
2. A fastener for the upper and lower sections of molding flasksv comprising a vertically disposed attaching plate to be secured to the upper section, a lug formed integrally with and extending outwardly from said plate, an ear formed integrally with the outer end of said lug, a vertical pin formed integrally with said lug and depending 110 therefrom, a. second vertical attaching plate to be'seeured to the lower section of the flask, a horizontal ear formed integrally with and extending outwardly from said second plate, said ear having an opening to receive said pin, a vertically swinging latch lever pivoted at its upper end to the ear of said lug, a beveled nose on the lower end of said lever for reception beneath said horizontal ear, and a weight on the outer edge 10 of said lever, at the lower end thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
