Description

PATENTED JAN. 1'7, 1905.
r wmllllllll UNITED STATES Patented J anuary 1'7, 190?).
JAMES TIMMS AND JAMES O. TIMMS, OF COLUMBUS. OHIO.
COUPLING- SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '780,0'?5, dated January 17, 1905.
Application filed June 23, 1904- Serial No. 213,851.
To (LZZ whmn 112'; may concern:
Be it known that we, J AMIGS Tim is and JAMEs O. TIMMs, residents of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Con plings; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in couplings, and more particularly to an improvement upon the construction disclosed in our application for patent filed March 3, 1904-, Serial No. 196,402, the object of the invention being to provide an improved double-ended reversible knuckle with an elongated opening or slot at its center and provide a reversible filler-block to close a portion of said opening and provide an opening or hearing for the pivot-pin at either end of said elongated opening, according to the position of the knuckle.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as willlbe more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in horizontal section of a coupling, illustrating our improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of the knuckle removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the filler-block, and Fig. i is a view illustrating a modification.
1 represents the coupling-head, and 2 our improved double-ended reversible knuckle, which is locked in its closed position by a sliding block 3 or other form of locking device. The knuckle 2 at its center is provided with an elongated slot or opening 4,, whose walls may have the general compound curvature shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or the walls of said opening may be parallel, forming a slot or opening of general oblong formation, as Shown in Fig. 4. 5 represents a filler-block which is of a size and shape tofill one end of said slot or opening 4 and forming a bearing in the other end of said opening of just the proper size to receive the pivot-pin 6 and permit free pivotal movement of the knuckle. When the knuckle is to be reversed in the head, this liller-block 5 is reversed in the opening 4, and it will be observed that there is never but a single opening in the knuckle, and that opening is just large enough to receive the pivot-pin. The filler-block adds strength to the knuckle and as itis readily reversible provides, in effect, two pivotal points of the knuckle without unduly weakening the same.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement or the parts described without departing from our invention, and hence we do not restrict ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a coupling-head, of a double-ended. reversible knuckle having an elongated opening in its central portion, a pivot-pin in said head adapted to pass through said opening in the knuckle, and a filler-block adapted to lit into either end of said opening in the knuckle and form a hearing at the other end for the pivot-pin.
2. The combination with adouble-ended reversible knuckle having an elongated opening in its central portion, of a filler-block adapted to fit either end of said opening and provide a circular opening at either end to receive the pivot-pin of the coupling.
3. The combination with a double-ended rcversible knuckle having an elongated opening in its central portion, the walls of said. opening having general compound curvature, and a filler-block adapted to fit either end of said opening and provide a circular pivot-pin-receiving opening at either end thereof.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
JAMES TlMMS. JAMES O. TIMMS.
