Application filed June 30, 1916.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, l-llARRY 1F. Anonneon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Glass Sign Characters; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sign letters or characters made of glass or other brittle material; and its primary object is to provide a sign character of this nature of such construction that it may be readily attached to a sign board or other base by a screw or similar fastening with little danger of cracking or breaking the character.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the construction herein described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of a glass sign letter having my invention embodied therein;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, and
lTigs. 3 and 4.- are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3--3 and 4% of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 1 denotes the body portion of a sign letter or character the one illustrated being in the form of the letter S, and which body is made of glass or other brittle material and of hollowed 0r dished shape in cross section. These letters are usually made by dipping a suitable mold in molten clear or transparent glass and when the lat ter has hardened, the rear portion of the body is ground to provide a Hat surrounding edge 2 adapted to bear against the sign board or other base to which the letter is applied. When the letter or character which, of course, may be of any shape and design, made of clear glass the rear face is given an ornamental coating indicated at 3 in lBigs. 3 and t and which coating may be of any description or may be omitted as will be obvious.
in order to permit the sign character to be fastened to the sign board by screws or analogous fastenings (not shown) the body portion is formed at one or more points with a hole or opening at which receives such Specification of Letters Patent.

screw. Formed on the hollow or concaved inner face of the character at the opening l is an inwardly extending tubular portion 5 through which the body of the screw is designed to pass and which has a fiat inner end 6 disposed in the plane of the edge 2 of the letter, see Fig. 3.
lformed in the outer curved or converted face of the letter around the opening -1- is a recess 7 designed to receive the head of the attaching screw and to form a shoulder which is reinforced by the tubular member or portion 5. It will be observed on reference to Fig. 3 that owing to the formation of the shoulder and the tubular member 5 immediately beneath the same that the thrust of the screw as it is turned in the board will come upon a solid body of glass because of the firm bearing of the bottom edge or shoulder 6 of the tubular member 5 on the sign board and hence all strain will be removed from. the dished or hollow body portion of the letter and there will be very little danger of cracking or breaking of the latter.
lFrom the foregoing it will be obvious that by molding the glass letter or character with the tubular portion depending from the screw opening and shaped to fit firmly against the sign board, that there will be no pronounced strain put upon the hollow body of the letter if ordinary care is used in applying the attaching screw and that the screw head being seated in the recess in the outer face of the letter will not render the letter unsightly since it need not project above the surface of the body of the letter and can be made to correspond in color with the body. lln practice l have found that this construction is exceedingly effective and it not only adds no extra cost to the letter but enables it to be more readily applied and with less expense.
ll claim:
A sign character formed of brittle mate rial and adapted to be secured to a solid base, said character comprising a concaveconvex body whose edge is shaped to engage the base, said body being formed with an opening to receive an attaching screw and having an integral tubular portion formed on its inner concave side, said tubular portion being concentric with said opening and having its inner end terminating in the plane of the edge of the body for contact with said base, the outer COHVBK side of the body having a depression concentric with In testimony whereof I have hereunto set sald opening to receive the head of the my hand in the presence of two SllbSUl'lblhg screw, said depression i'ornnng a shoulder witnesses.
which is reinforced by said tubular portion, HARRY F. ANDH SON whereby pressure exerted by the screw will Witnesses:
