CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 8, I917- 'LMQAWHW' Patented 106e, 11,1917.

RAYMOND IF. NORTH AND WARREN J. BUCHNER, OF GLENDIVE, IVIOI VTANA.
CLAMP. 1
1,2d9Al66.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RAYMOND F. NORTH and VVARREN J. BUOI-INER, citizens of the United States, residing at Glendive, in the county of Dawson and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the follow ing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to clamps and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially adapted for holding a car wheel down ont'he rail while the box in which the wheel axle is journaled is jacked for the insertion of a brassin the journal box or when any other operation or adjustment relating to the journal box becomes necessary and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be applied with convenience and facility.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved clamp wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation with a portion broken away illustrating a clamp constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention in applied position, the co-acting rail and wheel being shown in section; and
Fig. 2 is a view partly in top plan and partly in section of our improved clamp as herein disclosed, a co-acting rail being indicated by dotted lines.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings B denotes an elongated body or plate twisted to have the opposite end portions 1 and 2 of said body or plate in substantially right angular relation, the portion 1 being of a length less than the portion 2.
Overlying the outer or free extremity of the portion 1 is an end portion of a Hat Specification of Letters Patent. Patgmhgdl D 11; 1917,, Application iiled September 8, 1917. Serial No. 190,376.
arm 3, said arm 3 being pivotally engaged with the portion 1 through the niediumof the bolt 1 or the like. The opposite end portion of the arm 3 is bent to afford a hook 5 adapted to be placed over the head of the rail R and partially embrace the same. The outer or free extremity of the portion 2 of the body or plate B has loosely disposed therethrough the cylindrical shank 6 of the flat arm 7 and said arm 7 is also provided with a hook 8 adapted to co-act with the head of the rail R inthe same manner as has just been stated relative to the hook 5. Threaded .upon the shank 6 is a nut 9 or the like which co-acts with the body or plate B to assure an effective engagement of the hooks 5 and 8. Disposed through the portion 1 of the body or plate B in close proximity to the inner end thereof is a bolt 10 also directed through the slot 11 disposed longitudinally of the intermediateor base portion 12 of the substantially U-shaped member M. The pitch of the angles of the end portions or arms 14: and
15 of the member M is varied to meet the requirements of practiceand the free end portion of the end or arm 14 is provided with the inwardly directed toothed flange 16 adapted to engage with the under portion of the head of the rail R. Threaded through the second end or arm 15 is a screw 17 which is adapted to be engaged with the tread portion of the wheel W. As is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings the end or arm 15, when the memberM is in applied position overlies the tread flange of the wheel W.
Threaded upon the bolt 10 and co-acting with the body or plate B is the winged nut 18 which serves to lock the member M against movement independently of the body or plate B.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a clamp constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which itmay be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without materially departing from the principle and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
1. A- device of the character described comprisingan elongated body, rail engaging means carried by the body and spaced apart longitudinally of the body, a substantially U-shaped member arranged in termediate the rail engaging means, the intermediate portion of said member being provided with a slot disposed longitudinally thereof, and clamping means disposed through the slot of the member and the body.
2. A device of the character described comprising an elongated body, an arm pivotally engagedwith said body and provided with rail engaging means,-said arm having swinging movement in a direction longitudinally of the elongated body, a second arm provided with rail engaging means and having an end portion loosely disposed through the body, holding means engaged with the last named arm and co-acting with the body, and a substantially U-shaped mem- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ber operatively engaged with the body in termediate the arms.
3. A device of the character described comprising an elongated body, an arm pivotally engaged with said body and provided with rail engaging means, a second arm provided with rail engaging means and having an end portion loosely disposed through the body, and holding means engaged with the last named armand coacting with the elongated body, a substantially U-shaped member operatively engaged with the body intermediate the arms, the intermediate portion of said member being provided with a slot disposed longitudinally thereof, and a clamping means disposed through the slot of the member and the body.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in nesses.
