" H. COLE. NUT LOOK.
No. 513,884. I Patented Jan; 30,1894.-
wwmoeo mw vllcoz M 64 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY COLE, OF CEDAR HILL, OHIO.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,884, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed November 1893. Serial No. 492,150. (No model.)
To aZZ whom iv may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY COLE, of Cedar Hill, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Looks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved nut lock; and the object of the same is to provide a very simple device for running on the bolt end after the nut is in place for the purpose of preventing the latter from turning loosely; and with this object in view the invention consists of a coiled device which is adapted to take the threads of the bolt so as to be movable longitudinally thercon, and further in,
the novel manner of securing the end of the coil to its body portion.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bolt provided with my improved locking device. Fig. 2is a similar view of the look.
A designates the bolt and B the nut thereon of ordinary construction. The lock consists of a metallic, preferably wire, coil C which is of the same diameter as passage in nut Band which is tapered at its lower end as shown at F. One of thecoils of this locking device is bent laterally to form loop D, which latter is turned upward as shown and to which is secured the free upper end of the coil as shown at E. By this means a secure hold is formed for the coil end while at the same time the loop constitutes a convenient projection for engagement with a wrench or other device when the lock is tobe turned either on or ofi.
In operation the lock is run down upon the bolt end after the nut has been placed, with its tapered lower end next the nut so that should the latter start to turn backward the said tapered end will act as a wedge and hold the nut securely in place. As will be readily understood the coils of the lock are the same distance apart as the thread cuts on the bolt so that the lock is readily adjustable thereon.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved nut lock formed in' a coil adapted to be run on a threaded bolt, and a lateral projection on one of the coils of the lock to which the upper end of .the lock is secured, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved nut lock formed of a coil of wire adapted to be run on a threaded bolt, aloop bent laterally from one of the lock coils and to which loop the upper end of the lock is secured, substantially as shown and described.
3. An improved nut lock formed of a single piece of wirecoiled to ru n upon a threaded bolt,
a laterally extending loop formed by bending outward one of the coils, the loop being turned upward and the upper end of the look socured to the said upturned loop, substantially as shown and described.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY COLE. W'itnesses:
