Description

A\W. WILKINSON. Hydrogen Gas Burner.
Ox'y
Patented March19, 1872.
PATENT QIIFIGE.
ASA W. WILKINSON, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN OXV-HVDROGEN GAS-BURNERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,869, dated March 19,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA W. WILKINSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented `a new and useful Improvement in OXyHydrogen Gas-Burner; and I do hereby declare the followinglto be a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enablev those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g forming part of this specication, in which drawing- Figure 1 representsavertical central section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan 'or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates particularly to the tip of the burner, which consists of a tapering plug litted nicely into the mouth of the hydrogen-discharge pipe and provided with a central opening to tit the end of the oxygen-discharge pipe7 and with oblique jets round the central opening for the discharge ot' the hydrogen, while the face of the tipis concave in such a manner that by the relative position ot' the hydrogen-jets in relation to the cent-ral oxygen-jet, and particularly by the concavity ot' the face of the tip, the two gases are brought inintimate Contact on discharging from the tip,
y and thereby a perfect and economical combustion ot the hydrogen or other combustible gas is effected.
In the drawing, the letter A designates'my tip, formed of a tapering plug of metal, lava, soap-stone, or other material suitable for the purpose. This tip is tted nicely into the mouth ot' the hydrogen-discharge pipe B, which screws on a casting, C', perforated with two channels, a a', one of which forms the communication between the hydrogen-discharge pipe B and the hydrogen-supply pipe H, While the other leads from the oxygensupply pipe O to the oxygen-discharge pipe D. (See Fig. 1.) This last-named pipe extends up through the hydrogen discharge pipe in an oblique direction, so that its top meets the center of the tip A, which is bored out to receive the same. Round the central hole in the tip are bored four, more or less, small holes or jets, b, which lead into the hydrogen-discharge pipe, and which are slightly converging from the inside out, so that the jets 0i' gas discharging from the same Will cross each other over the center of the tip. The face of the tip is provided with a hemispherical depression, c, which forms a mixingchamber for the gases, and which materially assists to bring the oxygen in intimate contact with the combustible gas and to produce a complete and economical combustion.
My tip is not soldered to nor otherwise fastened to the burner, so that it can be readily removed and replaced by one ot' different form or shape, according to the nature of the gas to be burned or according t0 the flame to be produced.
Vhat I claim yas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The tip A, provided in its face with a depression, c, in combination with disch arge-pipes B and D for hydrogen and oxygen, said tip being furnished with a central hole to tlt the end of the oxygen-discharge pipe, and with oblique jets leading into the hydrogen-discharge pipe, substantially in the manner here in shown and described.
