DRESSING-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2?, 11bit.
Application filed. September 6, 1916. Seria1I\To. 118,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrH M. KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dressing-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved dressing cabinet and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character having a cabinet body in the form of a chest adapted to contain various necessary toilet articles, such as a pitcher, a washbowl, a jar and the like and wherein the chest may be closed to normally conceal the said articles.
The invention has as a further object to provide a device of this character wherein a disappearing washstand or shelf will be provided for the washbowl and wherein the said shelf will be shifted to lie within the chest or cabinet body upon the movement of the chest lid to close the cabinet.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide an arrangement wherein the bowl may normally remain upon the shelf or stand therefor to be shifted by the shelf to a position within the cabinet when the lid is closed and to be elevated by the shelf to a position where the said bowl will be easily accessible when the lid is opened.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide an improved carriage or carrier for the shelf or stand and of such construction that the shelf may, when desired, be readily removed from the carrier.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawings wherein I have illustrated the pre ferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cabinet showing the lid open with the wash-stand or shelf elevated to active position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the shelf in elevation and illustrating the position of the shelf with respect to the cabinet body in the active position of the shelf, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the cabinet closed with the wash-shelf moved to inactive position within the cabinet.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a cabinet body 10 preferably in the form of rack 14 of approved type.
a chest and which is provided with a hinged l1d l1 movable to close the cabinet. The cabinet 1s preferably oblong in general contour and may, of course, be constructed of bers of approved type, as more particularly shown in Fig. 1 so that the lid may be easily opened or closed. suitably upholstered upon its upper side so that the cabinet will form a settee when the lid is closed. Arranged within the lid ad jacent one end thereof is a pivotally mounted mirror 12 which may be tilted as desired and the lid is also preferably provided with a brush and comb rack 13 and a broom Connected to the front side wall of the cabinet body opposite the mirror is a conventional type of towel rack 15.
Extending forwardly within. the cabinet from the rear side wall thereof, is a bracket 16 which may be formed of sheet metal or other suitable material and pivotally connected to this bracket adjacent opposite ends thereof, are links 17 between the upper extremities of which extends a channel member 18 pivotally connected with the said links. Pivotally connected to the inner face of the adjacent end wall of the body 10 are spaced links 19 substantially identical with the links 17 and extending between the upper extremities of the links 19 and pivotally connected therewith, is a channel mem ber 20 substantially identical with the channel member 18. The channel members 18 and 20'form a swinging carriage or can rier upon which is mounted a washstand or shelf 21 extending between the said channel members and removably received thereby at its ends. The shelf 21 may be constructed of any suitable material and connected to the lower side thereof, is a linen rack or shelf 22. The shelf 22 is preferably of a width substantially equal to the width of the shelf 21 and, as illustrated in the drawings, may be formed from a piece of suitable sheet metal bent at its ends to form end walls for the shelf terminating in flanges seating against and connected to the lower side of the shelf 21. Mounted upon Preferably, the lid is the inner side of the lid 11 is an inwardly place in front of the racks 13 and 1% and upon the opening of the lid 11, the. carriage of the shelf 21 will be swung upwardly within vthe cabinet body 10 throughthe medium of the link 2& to elevate the said shelf to active position, as particularly shown in Fig. 2 so that the said'bowl will then be easily accessible. Uponthe closing of the lid, the link 21 will then swing the shelf carriage forwardly and downwardly to lower the shelf within thecabinet body and disposethe bowl in position to be received withinithe lid,'as particularly shown in Fig. 3, when the cabinet is closed.
It will therefore be seen that the bowl maymormally remain upon the shelf therefor to be housed within the cabinet when the cabinet isclosed and to be elevated upon the shelf therefor when the cabinet is opened. Necessary linen may be arranged be 1 easily accessible.
net when the lid is shut down. I accord inglyrprovide a very convenient, simple and handy form of dressing 'cabinet;
Having. thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
A device of thecharacter described ineluding a cabinet body provlde'd with a hinged lid, a bracket projecting horizontally into'the cabinet body intermediate the ends thereof-and connected-to an adjacent wall ofthe body of the cabinet, a memberswingingly supported upon a wall of the cabinet body, a second member swingingly supported-upon said'bracket and adapted to co'act with said first mentioned member to" provide a carrier, a shelf mounted aipoils'aidcarrier, and an operative connection between the carrier and said lid "for elevating 'the shelf upon the opening of the lid and operable to lower the shelf within the cabinet body upon-the closing'of the lid.
In testimony whereof I aifi-X my signature.
