To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HAROLD A. SWANAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain and Shade Fxtures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to curtain and shade fixtures.

The invention has more especial reference to a fixture .of the character stated, which may be adjusted laterally to various positions upon the window frame or other support, whereby, shades of different sizes may be accommodated thus eliminating the replacing of the brackets and consequently, pre venting scarring of the wood-work and providing, what might be termed, a universal shade bracket.

l\f[ore particularly, the present invention has reference to a novel construction of the bracket, the mounting therefor, and the means whereby the bracket can be permanently maintained in adjusted positions.

In the present construction, it is one of the aims and obj ects to do away with the use of nails, screws and other similar fastening devices which are usually employed in attaching curtain brackets and their mountings to the window frame and to provide means in lieu thereof, the mounting or base having a serrated or barbed portion which is inserted between the juncture of the vertical and horizontal portions of the window frame.

Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the detailed description hereinafter to follow which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming partthereof, and wherein I disclose a preferred embodiment of the invention for the purpose of illustration.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the views, it is proposed to use my improved fixture with the usual form of window frame comprising horizontal portions 1 and vertical portions 2, these portions being so joined as to constitute a substantially rectangular frame. In the present improvement, the base member comprising a rectangular frame 3 is provided and has formed upon one side thereof, a plurality of laterally extended teeth, indicated as 4:, while one end thereof is provided with a right angularly extended member 5. A plurality of horizontally disposed bars 6 and 6 are formed upon the rectangular frame 1 and are slightly raised above the same, as is shown at 7, the purpose of which will. presently be obvious. It is to be noted that these horizontally disposed bars are arranged in parallel relation ship, and provide for a slot 8 therebetwecu. A. shade receiving and supporting bracket 9, provided with fingers 10 and 11 is mounted on a supporting base 12, the fingers being secured to the base 12 in any suitable manner, such as is known to the art. When the shade bracket 9 and base 12 is assembled, a transverse opening 13 is provided, due to the arrangement of the fingers 10 and 11. Through this opening 18 are passed the horizontally disposed bars 6 and 6, thus permitting the base 12 to be snugly received by the inner edges of the rectangular frame 3, and preventing upward or outward movement of the said base and the bracket 9, the latter being attributable to the peculiar ar rangement of the horizontally disposed bars 6 and 6', which are bent or raised upwardly, as previously described at 7, and thereby permit the base 12 to be held, at all times, in close engagement with the vertical portion 2 of the window frame. A threaded opening is formed in the base 12 and receives thereinto, the threaded extremity of a set screw 14, whereby the shade bracket 9 may be maintained in an adjusted position. In passing the set screw 14 into engagement with the threaded opening of the base 12, the

shank portion thereof is received by the slot 8 as constituted by the bars 6 and 6' and due to the annular shoulder 14 which is arranged upon the shank of the set screw 1 1, it is obvious, that when the same is turned in engagement with the threaded opening of j the base, the said shoulder will engage with the bars (3 and 6 and by so doing, will effectually clamp the base and the shade bracket in their adjusted positions.

In applying this improved feature to a window frame, it is of course to be understood, that one is arranged upon either side of the window frame and carries, the usual trunnion receiving members, one of which comprises an annular opening as at 15, and the other a notch or pocket 16, this, however, constituting the conventional form of bracket and therefore is not claimed with this invention.

In applying my improved fixture to a window frame, the teeth 4 are preferably inserted between the juncture of the horizontal portion 1 and the vertical portion 2 of the window frame while the angular memher 5 is engaged with the inner side of the vertical member 2, thus, preventing outward lateral movement of the rectangular base 8. The shade brackets 9 are then adjusted laterally within the rectangular bases or frames 3 and when the desired position has been obtained, the set screws 14; are tightened so as to cause the binding of the base plate 12 and the horizontal disposed bars 6 and 6. The shade 17 is then inserted with in the annular opening 15 of the bracket 9 and the remaining trunnion dropped in the notch or seat 16, formed in the other bracket, whereupon, the same will be supported for operation.

Although I have described this device as being adapted for use in conjunction with shades, it is to be appreciated, that the device is equally well adaptable for use in supporting curtain poles and the like and that the shade supporting brackets may be replaced by the usual curtain pole supporting brackets, the extremities of which may be provided with the securing fingers 10 and 11 and the openings 13.

Still further embodiments of the invention than those herein especially defined may be resorted to as conditions or prefercnce may dictate, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claims.

I claim 1. In a shade fixture, a base comprising a rectangular frame, teeth carried by one side of the frame and extending therefrom whereby the same may be affixed to a window frame, a right angularly extending arm formed upon one end of the frame for preventing lateral movement thereof when afiixed to a window frame, horizontally disposed bars carried by and offset from said rectangular frame, said bars being arranged in spaced relation, a shade bracket slidably received by the rectangular base and positioned beneath said horizontal bars, and screw means engageable with the horizontal bars and said bracket whereby the latter may be secured in an adjusted position.

2. In a shade fixture, a base comprising a frame having a rectangular guide opening, teeth extending from one edge of the frame whereby the same may be aflixed to a window frame, a rectangularly extending arm formed upon one end of the frame for preventing lateral movement of the base, guide bars struck from and offset from the frame, said bars being arranged in spaced relationship and extending across the guide opening, a shade bracket having a recess for receiving the guide bars said recess providing fingers extending into the guide openings, a guide plate movable in the guide opening and being arranged to receive the finger, and a set screw extending between the guide bars engaging the guide plate said screw having a collar.
