Vof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bed ffurniture, and particularly to what are known as boX springs.

It is one of the objects of the invention to provide a device of this kind which `will have the appearance and afford the comfort inuse of a good box spring, and which will include a detachable cover and a detachable two last-named elements may be removed and renovated or replaced by others, as desired.

`A Vfurther object of .the invention is to provide a boX spring with a detaehably con-l nected cover, the connection between the cover and the frame ofthe box spring being at the bottom of the latter, so that it is not visible on casual inspection, but is readily accessible when desired.

Another object of theinvention is to pro vide a framefor a boX spring which is of very simple construction and which may, if desired, be adjustable.

Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less broad :than those stated above, together with the advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part lspecifically referred to in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations,

arrangements of parts, and applications of principles constituting the` invention and the scope of protection contemplated will appearfrom Ithe claims.

ln the accompanying drawings,vwhich are to be taken aspart of this specification, and in which I have shown a merely preferred form ofl embodiment ofthe invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating my invention as applied to an ordinary metal bed, partsbeing broken away, the better to reveal certain details ofconstruction; Fig. 2 is a perspective view looking at the complete device as it appears when turned upside down Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective, with parts broken away, showing the corner blocks of the, frame, and Fig. l is a sectional view taken on the line 1l-41 of Fig. 3.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, there is shown at 5 an ordinary bed stead which may be of brass or iron for instance, and which has side rails G and end rails. 7. A box spring in accordance with my` invention is intended to be supported upon the bedframe made up of these side and` end rails, and such a box spring is preferably made up of four corner blocks, one for each cornerof the bed frame. i These corner blocks are shown in detail in Figs. 3 andl, and they comprise an open box-like casing having an outside vertical` wall 53 which may be cut out, as indicated at 9, for the sake of lightness, and which casing is in part horizontally straight and in part horizontally curved, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Each corner block includes also a top `wall 10, a bottom wall 11 and a strengthening side wall or rib 12, the walls S and 12 connecting `the bottom 11 and top 10, all as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The top wall 10 is preferably provided with a stepped or otsetpart 11, defined by a shoulder 15, so that the horizontal arm 15 of an angle iron 13 may be laid upon the offset part 14 and have its outer surface flush with the remaining portion of the top wall 10. Likewise, the vertical wall 8 and the strengthening rib 12 are provided with offset or shouldered portions 17 and 18 respectively, so that the vertical member 19 of the angle iron may rest upon such shouldered portions, whereby its outer surface will be flush with the outer surface of the vertical wall 8. rlhe connection between the vertical and horizontal members of the angle iron and each corner block, is, by means of bolts 2O and 21, shown in Fig. ft. There is one angle iron connecting the corner blocks at the head of the bed and another angle iron connecting the corner blocks at the foot of the bed, and the horizontal portions 16 of said angle irons are provided with apertures 22,

through which maybe inserted the hooked ends 24-` of longitudinally extending coiled springs 25. Between the opposed outermost ones of these coiled springs 25 extend selvage members 2G, while a wire fabric 27 extends from the remaining springs 25 at one end of the frame to the remaining springs 25 at the other end of the frame. lf necessary, when desirable the top wall 10 of each corner block may also be provided with apertures 22 for the attachment of springs 25. The two corner blocks at one end of the frame are connected by means of a bar 28, said bar having a bent attach ing portion 29 at each end, a bolt 30 serv ing to connect each portion 29 with the side wall or rib 12 of the corresponding corner block; and the two corner blocks at the other end of the frame are similarly connected. The two corner blocks at one side of the frame are connected as by means of a bar 3l, which is secured to the wall 8 of a corner block at each end by means of a bolt 32. It will be obvious that the connecting bars 28 and 31, as well as the angle irons 13 may be extensible, so that the boxspring frame may be adjustable as to dimensions.

At the inside corner of the bottom wall l1 of each corner block there is secured a socket member having two branches 34 and 35 disposed at right angles to each other, which socket members are intended to receive the ends of connecting rods or pipes 36 and 37, the pipes 36 extending between the end corner blocks parallel to the bars 28 and angle irons 13, and the pipes 37 extending between the side corner blocks and parallel to the bars 31. Furthermore, the pipes or rods 36 and 37 are inwardly of and below the bars 28 and 31. The object of this arrangement is so that when the box-spring frame is put in position upon a bed frame, as shown in Fig. 1, the corner blocks resting upon the side and end rails of the bed, will support the box-spring frame, while the sub-frame made up of the pipes or rods 36 and 37, will lie inside the bed frame. Another reason for the offsetting of the sub-frame is because since the sub-frame is held within the side and end rails of the bed, it (the sub-frame) cannot be horizontally distorted, and this will prevent distortion of the main frame. At the same time distortion of the sub-frame in a vertical direction would not have any bad result, because the device as a whole rests upon the corner blocks. It is of course to be understood that these connecting pipes or rods 36 and 37 may also be extensible, so as to allow for adjustment in case adjustment is made of the bars 28 and 3l and angle irons 13.

In use, assuming that the corner blocks have been assembled with the connecting bars 28 and 31, the angle irons 13, the connecting pipes or rods 36 and 37, and the spring fabric 27, a pad 38 is placed in position upon the spring fabric 27, and then a cover 39 is placed over the pad and the entire spring frame. This cover includes a top, ends 40 and sides 41 like an open box, and the corner portions 42 are horizontally curved, to correspond with the corner curves of the blocks 8. The sides 41 and ends 40 are made long enough so that they may be turned in under the corner blocks 8, connecting bars 31 .and connecting bars 28, and these sides and ends are drawn toward the pipes or rods 36 and 37, as by means of a cord or rope 43, threaded through apertures 44 along the free edges of the cover, which cord or rope 43 is also passed around the pipes or rods 36 and 37. It is obvious that some other means might be employed to draw the free edges of the cover inwardly toward the pipes 36 and 37. At any rate, I prefer to employ some fastening means whereby the cover will be readily detachable from the frame. The effectV of thus drawing the free edgesv of the cover inwardly beneath the frame and toward the pipes 36 and 37 is to stretch the cover, and to glve the article the appearance of a box spring or a box mattress, while, at the same time, the cover and the pad are b oth separable, and either one or Vboth may b e removed and cleaned or replaced by others. Accordingly, I am enabled to give the appearance and afford the comfort of a regulation box spring notwithstanding that I j employ merely a skeleton frame. Y

Inasmuch as many changes could be made in the above construction, parently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and n-ot in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understoodthat the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

I claim:

1. In a device of the kind described, a frame comprising four corner blocks each having a vertical outside wall and each having a top wall and a bottom wall, end bars and side bars connected to the bottom walls of said corner blocks, a spring-supporting member extending between the corner blocks at each end of the frame, a spring stretched between said supporting members, members connecting together the corner blocks and forming a sub-frame parallel with the main frame but smaller than the latter and extending below the same, a cover overlying the main frame and having sides and ends,

and means for drawing the free edges ofV the cover tightly around said main frame and toward said sub-frame.

2. In a device of the kind described, a frame comprising four corner blocks, each corner block having a bent or curved vertical wall andtop and bottom walls, springsupporting members connecting the corner blocks at each end of the frame, a spring stretched between said supporting members, end rods connecting the end corner blocks together, said rods being substantially flush and many vapwith said vertical wall, side rods connecting the side corner blocks together, said rods being substantially flush with said vertical walls, and a sub-frame having its sides and ends parallel to said bars respectively, said sub-frame having its corners connected to the inner portions of the bottom walls of said corner blocks respectively, a cover overlying the spring and having sides and ends depending below the side and end bars respectively, and means for drawing the free edges of the cover' toward said sub-frame.

In a device of the kind described, a frame comprising four corner blocks, each corner block having a bent or curved vertical wall and top and bottom walls, springsupporting members connecting the corner blocks at each end of the frame, a spring stretched between said supporting members, end rods connecting the end corner blocks together, said rods being substantially flush with said vertical wall, side rods connccting the side corner blocks together, said rods being substantially Hush with said vertical walls, and a sub-frame having itssides and ends parallel to said bars respectively, said sub-frame having its corners connected to the inner portions of the bottom walls of said corner blocks respectively, a cover overlying the spring and having sides and ends depending below the side and end bars respectively and means for detachably connecting the free edges of said cover to the sub-frame.

l. In a device of the kind described, a frame comprisin four corner blocks, each corner block having a bent or curved vertical wall and top and bottom walls, springsupporting members connecting the corner blocks at each end of the frame, a spring stretched between said supporting members, end rods connecting the end corner blocks together, said rods being substantially flush with said vertical wall, side rods connecting the side corner blocks together, said rods being substantially flush with said vertical walls, and a sub-frame having connection with the underside of said bottom walls, a cover over-lying the spring and having sides and ends depending below the side and end bars respectively, means for detachably connecting the free edges of said cover to the sub-frame and a separate removable pad between said cover and said frame.

5. In a device of the kind described, a bed frame and a spring frame, said spring frame having a main portion adapted to lie upon and be supported by the bed frame and having a separate sub-frame extending in side the bed frame and connected thereto at its corners, a cover overlying the spring frame and having sides and ends depending below the main portion of the spring frame, and means for attaching the free edges of the cover to said sub-frame.

6. In a device of the kind described, a bed frame and a spring frame, said spring frame having a main portion adapted to lie upon and be supported by the bed frame and having a separate sub-frame extending inside the bed frame, said main portion including corner blocks having horizontally curved outer walls or surfaces to which blocks said sub-frame is attached, a cover overlying the spring frame and having sides and ends depending below the main portion of the spring frame, and means for drawing the free edges of the cover toward said subframe.
