LAWRENCE C. GRUBER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
narnia-PRESS.
Application filed June 21, 1917.
To all 'whom t may concern: l
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE C. GRUBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Presses; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper presses. These devices as heretofore constructed have been rather complicated in construction, cumbersome in operation, and expensive to build.
It is an object of this invention to provide a paper press by means of which a number of papers may be firmly held together so that glue or other adhesive material may be applied to one edge thereof and in which the package, pad or tab so formed may be set to one side to permit the glue hardening, thereby firmly binding the papers together along one edge thereof.
It is an obj ect of this invention to provide a device for therpurpose specified which is very simple in operation and easily taken apart for removal of the pads, and which is very quickly assembled.
t is a Vfurther object of this invention to provide a device which is simple in operation, cheap to construct and which is very eiiicient for the purpose for which intended.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosure in the specification and drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the method of operation.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a device embodying my invention.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view showing a modification.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detail showing the construction of the teeth on the clamping bar.
As shown in the drawings:
l, indicates a base member or plate which has an aperture therein at one corner, and

is provided at the opposite end with two sets of downwardly struck lugs 2 3, which are bent over to for'n guides or ways. An end member or plate e, is provided which is punched or otherwise formed to provide a plurality of apertures 5therein, and which is provided at the bottom thereof with inturned lugs or arms 6, adapted to slidably engage in said guides or ways in the base plate. A relatively narrow plate or end member 7, is provided which, as shown, has stamped, cut or otherwise formed therein av plurality of apertures 8, and the lower reduced end thereof is bent over to form a finger or retaining member 9, adapted to engage in the aperture in the base plate hereinbefore mentioned. Said plate or end framev member 7, is provided with a strengthening rib 10, which prevents flexing of the plate when under pressure. A clamp or presser bar 12, is provided, having at each end thereof outwardly directed teeth 13 14, adapted to engage on the respective apertures 5 8, in the end plates or members, and as shown, said teeth are inclined upwardly at the outer ends to prevent the end plates from springing outward under pressure.
As shown in Fig'. 4, the plate 4, has a plurality of lugs or arms l5 l6, struck therefrom at each lower end, and the base plate is formed to provide a plurality of independent guides or ways 17 l8, into which said lugs slidably engage.
The operation is as follows:
This work is usually performed upon a bench against the wall. The end plate e, is secured to the base plate by engaging the lugs or arms 6, in the ways 2 3, on the base plate, and the paper to be formed into pads is placed on said base plate, after which the clamping plate or bar l2, is firmly pressed downwardly thereon with its tooth 13, engaged in one of the apertures 5, in the plate 4. The end member or plate 7, is then secured to the base member by inserting the lug 9, into the aperture in said base plate, and turning the end member to upright position, engaging tooth 14:, on the clamping bar into one of the notches 8. In this position, the paper is firmly clamped together and ready to receive the glue or other binding material, after which it may be set aside to dry and harden. The pad or pads are then removed by simply exerting a little pressure on clamping plate l2, sufhcient to permit swinging the plate 7, laterally, after which the clamping bar is removed and the pads taken out of the press. Should it be desired to sew the sheets or leaves, the paper clamped in place in the press may be perforated and sewed through the slots 20, in the bar l2, and slot 19, in the base plate l. I have shown a very simple and etlicient press, and one that has the advantage of being cheap to Construct.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
l. A press or' the class described comprising af base member, a plurality of end members, one pivotally secured thereto and both detachable therefrom, and a clamping member adapted to be engaged to said end mem` bers.
2. A paper press comprising a base merber, an upright member, interifitting means on the said members whereby the upright member is detachably connected with the base member, a member pivotally connected with the base member, and a clamping bar adapted to connect the end members.
3. A. paper press comprising a base plate having an aperture therein, an apertured end plate having its lower end angularly directed to engage in said aperture adapting the end member being swung to upright position, an
apertured end member secured to the opposite end of the base plate, and a clamping bar having teeth adapted to be engaged in said apertures in the end plates.
4. A paper press comprising a base plate, an end plate slidably engaged therewith, an end plate pivotally engaged thereto, and a clamping member adapted to engage said end plates in upright position and hold them in fixed relation.
A press of the class described comprising a base platehaving an aperture therein, an end member having its lower end bent to engage in said aperture pivotally connecting the end member to the base plate, a plurality f of guides secured to the bottom of the base plate, an end plate, arms thereon slidably engaging in said guides, and a clamping bar for pressing the paper together and adapted to engage said end plates to hold the paper compressed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in thi presence of two subscribing witnesses.
