Description
JOHN M. HUNTER.
Heels for Boots and Shoes.
No. 124,682. PatentedMareh19 J872.
Wiinesses fla eniar;
I 624%); X54312, e/fi JOHN MORRIsON HUNTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HE ELS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 124,682, datedMarch 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MORRISON HUNTER, of the city ,and county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Heels for Boots and Shoes.
My improvement contains some of the features shown in my patentdated April 25, 1871.
The following is a description of what Iconsider the best means of carrying out the present invention.
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification. Figure 1 is a cross-section ofthe full size of heel. Fig.2is a view of the face of metal parts on a line with A, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the-movable part of heel with its attachments, but differing in some respects from thejform shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a view of the face of metal parts 011 a line with A, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
B is the fixed part of heel. O is ametal plate holding the ring d by the flange 21, upon which it revolves. e is rim, of ring, beveled inside and outside to a thin edge, and extending nearly to'the ground surface of the revolving part of heel. This prevents theleather lifts f and g from spreading, and acts instead of nails to take the wear. It may be made of malleable iron,' which also may be case-hardened, if preferred. h hare screws, let through the holes '5 i in the leather lift f f, and which serve to attach the plate (3' to the fixed part of heel B, and to hold down and keep in position the ring cl with its attached leather lifts forming the movablepart of heel. m m are screws, serving to attach the ring (I to the leather lift f. In Fig. 3, there being no external rim, the nails t it hold the lifts" together and take the wear. A few nails maybeneoessary even when 'it from turning.
the rim 6 'e is used, as in Fig. 1. Heads of screws h h, in Figs. 1 and 3, are indicated by letters 8 s. In Figs. 2 and 4, r r are holes in ring d for passage of screws m m.
The nature of my improvement may perhaps best be understood by reference to my patent dated April 25, 1871. The screws 1 of said patent are sunk down into the plate N and the leather lifts are attached to the ring 122, so that they revolve with it; also, in that patent the central part'is movable. In this the plate 0 is designedto be a fixture.
The holes 3 and the corresponding screws h being out of the center perform a different function from the hole i and screw h, which is in the center. The screws out of the centerv not only attach the plate C, but also prevent They increase greatly the stability and firmness of the work. It is possible that one hole, 2', at a proper distance from the center, might serve by turning successive- 1y into the difl'erent positions for the insertion of all the screws h but I prefer the whole number, as shown.
I claim as my invention- 1. The opening or openingsz', by which the screwsl are let into plate 0, and let through the same into the fixed part of the heel B after the lift f has been attached to the ring d.
2. The metal plate 0, attached to the part B, as described, in combination with the revolving ring d, provided with a bearingsurface, f g, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MORRISON HUNTER.
