IMPROVEMENT IN HOOKS FOR HATS, COATS, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 120,156, dated October 24, 1871 antedated October 6, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT J. GooDRIcH, of Wolcottville, in the county of Litchiield and State of Connecticut, have invented and made a cerv tain new and useful Improvement in Hooks for Hats, Coats, 6to.; and the following is hereby declared to be a correct description of the same.

The hook most generally in use for hanging hats, coats, and other articles upon is composed of a plate to set against and be secured to the wardrobe, wall-strip, or other place of attachment, and an arm or arms extending from the said plate to form the hook or hooks, said plate and arms being cast in one piece of metal. In consequence of the attaching-plate standing at right angles to the arms or hooks, said plate cannot easily be cast of an ornamental form, neither can said plate be cast with the holes in it for the attaching-screws. The object of my invention is to overcome this difiioulty, and furnish a hook that can be made with an attachingA plate of the desired ornamental shape, and in which plate the holes for the screws are formed in casting said plate. I make use of an attach ing-plate made as a separate piece from the hook, and upon the hook is a base that is adapted to set within a circular or other-shaped recess in the said separate plate, the two parts being irmly connected to each other and prevented from turning by the screws that are used to attach it in place, and which screws pass through holes in the main plate, and also through notches formed in the edges of the base of the hook, said holes and notches being formed in casting the respective plates. By this construction the plates may be applied to hooks of different patterns, and vice versa, and the casting is greatly facilitated andthe cost lessened, as none of the holes have to be bored.

a represents the attaching-plate, which is to be cast ofthe desired size, shape, and ornamental character. Said plate is made with the circular or other-shaped recess b, corresponding with and to receive the base c of the hook d. The plate a is also provided with the holes eI e for the attaching-screws ff, said recess and screw-holes being made in the plate when it is cast or formed. The base c is to be of asize and shape to set within the recess bin the plate a, and is cast with the hook c. The notches L h in the edges ofthe base c are also made in the said base' when it and the hook are cast.

It will now be understood by reference to the drawing that the holes for the screws ff, being formed partly in the plate a and partly in the base c, said screws prevent the base c turning in its recess, and also clamp the two parts firmly to each other in consequence of the heads of the screws overlapping and lying upon said plate a and base c. It' desired, the ornamental arm 7c may be cast with the base c and hook d, and it will be apparent that one form of plate a may be used with bases c, having varying sizes or shapes of hooks d.

I claim as my invention- The base c of the hook d, made with notched edges, in combination with the separate plate a containing the screw-holes, the parts being constructed in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
