Be it known that LNVILLIAM ANDREW BAUMGARTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Billings, in the county of Yellowstone, State of Montana, have invented a new and useful 'louch-Type-Writing Shield, of which the following is a speclfication.

This invention relates to certain improvements in typewriter attachments and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved attachment of this general character adapted to obstruct the keyboard of a typewriter without offering interference to the operation thereof whereby the mastery of touch typewriting may be facilitated.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved attachment whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully setforth.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompan ying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1' is a view in side elevation of an attachment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, M denotes an elongated member substantially in the form of an inverted V and having one of its arms, as at 1, rounded and provided in its free end with the longitudinally disposed slot 2 at substantially right angles to the plane occupied by the member M. The slot 2 is adapted to receive the central portion of an elongated plate 3, said plate 3 being provided at its center with the transversely alined openings 4: through which the anchoring members 5 are adapted to be directed, said anchoring members 5 being rivets or the like suitably disposed through the arm 1.

Adjacent its opposite extremities the plate is providedwitlithe transversely disposed notches 6 adapted to be suitably engaged with studs or the like extending from the corner posts or standards of the typewriter frame and whereby my improved attachment is maintained in applied position.

S denotes a shield herein disclosed as substantially rectangular in form and which is provided at its center with the elongated slot 7. The shield S is adapted to be imposed upon the second arm 8 of the member M and for which reason said arm 8 is preferably flattened. Disposed through the arm 8 is the rivet 9 or the like provided with an angular head 10 seated within the slot 7, whereby it will be at once perceived that the shield S is effectively maintained against axial rotation. Also disposed through the arm 8 of the member M is a screw 11 having its shank directed through the slot 7 Coacting with the screw 11 is the clamping nut 12 which is adapted to engage the outer face or surface of the shield S and whereby it will be at once noted that the shield S may be effectively held at different adjustments longitudinally of the slot 7 as the necessities of practice may dictate. It is thought to be self-evident that the shield S is of such dimensions as to obstruct the line of vision from the eyes of the operator toward the keyboard of the typewriter so that said keyboard is rendered substantially invisible so an ordinary style of typewriter may be employed for practising touch writing without the necessity of changing the keys. It will also be appreciated that my improved attachment may be readily removed when required. It is also thought to be obvious that when my improved attachment is in applied position no obstruction whatever is oiiered to the operation of any of the parts of the typewriter and that the shield S will be so positioned as to in no way interfere with the hands of the operator when operating the keyboard.

From the foregoing description, it is and facility with which it may be assembled,

and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

7 A device of the character described comprising a member substantially in the form of an inverted V, an elongated plate secured to one of the free end portions of the member and extending beyond opposite sides thereof said plate being provided with anchoring means adjacent its opposite ends, the opposite end portion of the member being flattened, a shield resting upon said flattened portion ofthe member and co-acting means carried by the shield and the member for securing the'shield to the member at different positions longitudinally of the flattened portion of the member.
