FOUNTAIN-WUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 30, 1917.
Application filed February a. 1915. Serial No. 5,834.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. BRowNn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Prince Bay, county of Richmond, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Fountain- Nozzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates particularly to sanitary drinking fountain nozzles, wherein the water is projected from the end of the nozzle directly into the mouth of the user, and is especially applicable to fountain nozzles em ployed in connection with dental spittoons.
In such fountain nozzles it is quite convenient for mischievous persons to so restrict the mouth of the nozzle, by placing their hand or finger over the orifice, as to squirt the water laterally therefrom, beyond the confines of the spittoon bowl.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a fountain nozzle with means to convey from the nozzle any water which may be flowing therefrom, should any attempt be made to'retard such flow; and to provide means for deflecting from said nozzle any water which may be so conveyed.
Specifically stated, my invention comprehends a fountain nozzle directed upwardly, a shield for said nozzle comprising a sleeve projecting slightly beyond the outlet end of said nozzle and afiording an annular conduit between the nozzle and sleeve, and a deflecting plate secured to and embracing said nozzle and forming a convenient support for said sleeve.
My invention further includes all of the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevational view of a faucet provided with a nozzle in the form of a goose neck, having its outlet orifice directed upwardly and embodying a convenient form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the gooseneck nozzle shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view, of the structure shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4c is a transverse sectional view taken through said gooseneck nozzle on the line ii in Fig. 2.
In said figures, the faucet 5 is controlled by the hand-wheel 6, and is provided with the gooseneck 7 terminating in the nozzle'8, which is directed upwardly and obliquely outward at a slight angle to the perpendicular. i
The nozzle 8 is arranged to project a fountain of water upwardly from its outlet ,orifice 9, so as to be imbibed by the user without coming in contact with the nozzle or any of the parts associated therewith.
In order to prevent the user from in any way restricting'the orifice of the nozzle for the purpose of maliciously squirting the water laterally, said nozzle is provided with a sleeve 10 which projects somewhat beyond the end of the nozzle, and which comprises an open tube whose inner diameter is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the nozzle, thus affording an annular conduit surrounding the nozzle for directing the water emitted therefrom should any attempt be made to. retard theflow of water at the nozzle.
The nozzle 8 is provided, somewhat below its outlet orifice and in the bend of the gooseneclr 7, with a transversely extended deflector plate 12, which is preferably elongated laterally and which is eccentricallysecured to said nozzle, being snugly fitted thereto and arranged to arrest any flow or drippings which might tend to follow the gooseneck 7 by attraction.
The deflecting plate 12 serves to support the sleeve 10 in concentric relation to the outlet end of the nozzle 8, said sleeve being chamfered on one side for engagement with said plate 12 in angular relation thereto, as best shown in Fig. 2. This it will be seen affords a suitable opening between the remaining lower edge of the sleeve 10 and the plate 12 for the escape of the water passing through the annular conduit 13, formed between the inner surface of the sleeve 10 and the outer surface of the nozzle 8.
It will be obvious that any attempt on the part of the user to retard the flow of water emitted from the outlet orifice 9 of the nozzle 8, by placing his hand or finger over the upper end of the sleeve 10, will cause the water to flow downwardly through the annular conduit 13, and be discharged from its lower end against the deflecting plate 12, which will deflect the flow outwardly into any suitable receptacle provided therefor, such as a basin, spittoon, etc.
The deflecting plate 12 not only serves to direct the flow of water from the nozzle in case of such tampering with the fountain but serves to direct any drippings which may tend to flow down the nozzle and which. would otherwise tend to be carried along said nozzle rearwardly by attraction.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may he made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
l. A fountain nozzle having its outlet end directed upwardly from a downwardly looped conveyor, a sleeve forming a conduit around said nozzle and having its open ends disposed above and below the outlet of said nozzle, and means disposed on the upwardly extending portion of said loop, operative to deflect therefrom any water which may be discharged from the lower end of said sleeve.
2. A fountain nozzle having its outlet end directed upwardly, and a sleeve forming a conduit around said nozzle and having its open ends disposed above and below the outlet of said nozzle, and a deflector disposed transversely of said nozzle and extending across, but not closing, the lower end of said sleeve, and having its edges free.
3. A fountain nozzle having its outlet end directed upwardly,a sleeve concentric with said nozzle forming an annular conduit around the nozzle and having its open ends extended above and below the outlet of said nozzle, and a deflecting plate extending across, but not closing, the lower open end nae/near of said sleeve, and disposed oblique to the axis thereof.
4;. A. fountain nozzle having its outlet end directed upwardly, in angular relation to the perpendicular, a sleeve concentric with said nozzle forming an annular conduit around the nozzle and having its open ends extended above and below the outlet orifice of said nozzle, and a sloping deflecting plate snugly fitting said nozzle and extended transversely thereof.
5. A fountain nozzle having its outlet end directed upwardly, a sleeve concentric with said nozzle forming an annular conduit around the nozzle and having its open ends extended above and below the outlet orifice of said nozzle, and a deflecting plate securely mounted on said nozzle and extended transversely thereof for supporting the sleeve, said sleeve having its lower edge ehamfercd upon one side at an angle to its axisfor engagement with the surface of said plate.
6. A fountain nozzle having its outlet end directed upwardly, a sleeve having open ends disposed respectively above and below the outlet orifice of said nozzle, and a plate of greater diameter than said sleeve, carried by said nozzle and arranged to deflect the water discharged from the lower end of said sleeve to one side thereof.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of January, A. D. 1915.
