DRINKING-FOUNT.
AppIication filed December 27, 19-13. Serial No. 809,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT CORTHAUS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Founts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drinking founts; and it has for its object the provision of a device of this character which may be connected with any well known form of faucet and which will be provided at its discharge end with a bowl, from which the water is adapted to flow in substantially bubble form to permit the water to be readily taken into the mouth of the user without necessitating his touching the mouth with any part whatever of the fount.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the bowl end of the fount may be adjusted laterally with relation to the faucet so as to permit the latter to be used for any ordinary purposes, as the occasion may demand.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a drinking fount wherein the delivering tube of the bowl will be provided with a drain passage so as to permit the waste water to freely drain from the fount when the latter is not in use. 1
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of the fount with parts in section, showing the operative application of the same to a faucet; Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, showing the fount adjusted to an inactive position; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the bowl end of the fount; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the intake end of the fount.
The fount comprises a delivering tube or pipe 1 of substantially U-form and embodying a pair of spaced vertical legs 2 and 3 and a connecting curved portion 4, the latter having its lower wallprovided with a drain perforation 5, by means of which water which may remain in the fount after the supply water is cut off may freely drain from the fount, as will be understood. The leg 2 of the fount is provided with a bowl 6, by means of which the water may be properly centered and made to dischargein substantially bubble form from the device. In order to cause the discharge water to be properly concentered and held against discharging beyond a prescribed or predetermined distance above the bowl, the latter is preferably of a gradually restricted diameter from its center to points respectively toward its opposite ends. The upper end of the bowl is provided with a discharge opening 7. The opposite leg 3 of the fount is preferably longer than the leg 2 and at its receiving end it is provided with a bowl 8 which is substantially identical with the form of bowl 6 at the discharge end of the fount, the difference in the two bowls being in the formation of the opening 9 in the bowl 8, the walls of the said opening being preferably curved and slightly flared in a downward direction in order to prevent undue splashing of the water when the bowl 8 isadjusted beneath the source of supply from which the water is to be conducted to the drinking end of the fount.
A fount as designed herein is primarily intended to be used in connection with faucets such as the one shown at 10 in Figs. 1 and 2. Such form of faucet usually forms a part of a catch-basin or the like 11. The branch 12 of the faucet is provided with a clamp 13, the section 14: thereof being pro-- vided with a depending screw 14 having a pair of superimposed washers 15, 15 and a nut 16 and interposed between the washers is a short horizontal branch 17 of a bracket 18( The screw 14 is passed through the branch 17 of the bracket so that the latter may be revolved upon the screw and the receiving end of the fount may be readily adjusted beyond the active position relative to the nozzle of the faucet 10. The said bracket 18 has its lower end extended beyond portions 19 of a collar 20, the latter being shown as embracing the leg 3 of the fount and provided with a set screw 21 which extends through said lower end of the faucet, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The lower end of the bracket is provided with a bracing surface 22, which is adapted to engage against the adjacent portion of the leg 3, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to give the fount the necessary stability and permit the same to be operatively supported from the faucet. From the construction set forth, it is seen that the clamp 13 is adjustable in a horizontal direction on the branch 12 of the faucet so that the opening 9 in the bowl Specification of Letterslatent. Patented M31123, 1915.
8 may be centered with relation to the discharge nozzle of the faucet. The water may be then turned on and discharged into the fount for delivery to the bowl 6 hereinbefore specifically referred to. WVhen not in use, the pipe 1 may be swung around to the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the faucet may be used for any ordinary purpose. The bowl 6 has its external walls curved downwardly at 6 and then outwardly at 6 then downwardly at 6, then inwardly at 6 then downwardly at 6 and then again inwardly at (S This arrangement is preferred so that the overflow of water may be held against splashing onto the person of the user as the water issues from the bowl.
I claim A drinking fount for use in connection with a faucet and comprising a U-shaped tube having an intake bowl at the upper end of one of its arms and a delivering bowl at the end of the other arm, in combination With a clamp for engaging around the faucet, a bracket pivotally connected to the lower side of said clamp, the pivot axis of 25 ALBERT CORTHAUS.
