Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,481, dated March 12, 1872.

` ment in steam-cylinders for steaming, dressing, or iinishing woolen goods, cloth, zc.; and consists in covering a longitudinal slot in the outer cylinder with fine Wire-gauze netting, and providing the inner tube with slots or openings, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter recited.

A represents a metal cylinder of any desired size. Through the upper side of this cylinder is formed a slot, a, the opening thereofbeing covered by a fine wire-gauze or net-work, B. The ends of the cylinder are tightly closed by heads b b, and from the bottom of the cylinder, near one of its ends, is fitted a tube, d, and from one head, b, projects the tube j'.v Vithin the cylinder A is placed a tube, O, having formed therein two slots, e e, of about the same length as the slot a in the cylinder A.- These slots e e are formed inthe tube O in such manner as when said tube is placed within the cylinder A the slots e e will open against the interior ofthe cylinder A at points immediately below the line of its axis, as shown in Fig 2. The tube O is held in position by having one end screwed into one ot' the heads b, and the other end fitting into a socket, g, formed into the other head.

The apparatus being constructed as above described, steam is admitted through the tube finto the tube C, and issues therefrom into the cylinder A through the slots e e, finding exit through the wire-gauze B to the surface of the cloth as it passes across it, giving the cloth the necessary nish. In steam cylinders heretofore constructed for this purpose the water from condensed steam would settle at the bottom of the cylinder A, from which it would be blown or forced out of perforations made in the upper side of said cylinder into the cloth, spotting it and otherwise injuring These objectionable features were caused by making perforations in the tube C and placing said tube within the cylinder A in such manner as would allow the full force of the steam when issuing from the tube to impinge directly on the water with full force, and thus produce the injury in the manner above described. By my invention, however, these objections are entirely obviated, for by making the slots e e above described in the tube C the first force of the steam is received on the sides of the cylinder, and as it issues from two sides of the tube at the same time with equal force it tends to keep the water in the bottom of the cylinder, and at the same time issue through the meshes of the gauze in a dry state to the surface of the cloth, the tine gauze tending also to strain the steam, keeping back any water that might by chance tend to issue through the gauze with the steam, the greater part of the water passing out of the cylinder through the tube d.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A steam-cylinder for dressing cloth, Ste., having a slotted outside cylinder, the slot therein being covered by gauze, in combination with an interior tube having two or more slots therein, in the manner and for the purpose hereinbefore described.
