WILLIAM ROBERTSON, OF YORKVILLE, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MECHANISMS FOR SHRINKING AND DRYING CLOTH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,108, dated September 1 1874 application filed August 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROBERTSON, of Yorkville, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on 010th Shrinking and Drying Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to a machine or apparatus for shrinking or sponging cloth by steam saturation, and drying the same by steam heat, the object being to steam and dry the cloth without removing it from the perforated cylinder on which it is to be wound; and it consists of a perforated cylinder having connected steam-inlet pipes and internal heating-pipes, and an adjustable gage telescoping on the end, to be used in connection with a suitable steam generator and supportingframe.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved machine, the perforated cylinder being partly broken to show the internal heating-pipes.
A is a frame or stand, of any suitable construction, to receive the perforated cylinderB horizontally, which is supplied with steam from a steam generating apparatus, which may consist simply of a boiler, b, and lamp 6 underneath. G is a feed-pipe to convey steam from the generator to the cylinder, and which cylinder contains a series or system of pipes,
. D, of which E is the inlet, branching from the pipe I, and F the outlet, provided with a suitable cock, G. The pipe 1 is provided with a cock, H, and enters the cylinder centrally at the end, to discharge steam directly into the cylinder, or connecting with or forming an integral portion of a perforated pipe, J, running longitudinally through the cylinder to distribute steam therein, or connecting with a sleeve of a tubular gage, J, coxering one end of the cylinder, and telescoping thereon to cover the perforations in the cylinder B not covered by the cloth. Thus the gage can be regulated to suit any width of cloth.
The cloth being wound around the cylinder, steam is admitted through the inlet I, and, when the cloth is sufficiently saturated, the valve H is closed. The steam then passes through the inlet E into the pipes D, heating the same and drying the cloth. After the steam has passed through the pipes D it can escape through the outlet by opening the cock.
I claim as my invention- The perforated cylinder B, provided with steam-inlets I E and outlet F, internal steam heating-pipes D, and adjustable gage J, for use in connection with a suitable steam-generator for shrinking and drying cloth, as set forth.
W. ROBERTSON.
