Description

Letters Patent No 91,731, dated June 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEATHR-RENQVATORS.
The 'Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making pan of the am To all Awho-m it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GA-Lvix H. hAnxnAiu, of
Canterbury, Windham county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Featlier-Renovators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lcttels of reference mariied thereon.

The object of my improvementsis to perfect the drying-cylinder of a leathera'enovating machine, whereby the ,same is rendered quicker in operation and more thorough 4in its work, as well as being more easily handled.
ln my improved device, T.use a double-walled lower portion in the cylinder, which enables the same to be thoroughly heated by steam or bot air, without the condensing ot' the same moistening the inside of the cylinder, where the feathers are placed, thereby allowing them to be dried perfectly.
I also arrange the arms for stirring the feathers in i a peculiar manner around the main rotatingshalt, enabling the same to he turned much more easily, as well as prcrLnting any drip from the condensing of the `'apor after steaming the feathers directly.
And by peculiar' devices used upon the drying-cylinder l am enabled to pack the feathers, after steaming and drying, into the tick or case, as may be, by merely turning the main shaft.

Secondary branches, h, are arranged so as to extend upwards on nach side from the pipes E and E', and these pipes, lo, are made much smaller, and serre to conduct the steam throughout the space C more entirely and evenly than would otherwise be the case.,

ln the peculiar arrangement of these arms, in co net-tion with the hollow cylindrical shaft ll, I obta g i :rough which a great advantage, as well as in the construction of 'the arms themselves.

This arlangement accomplishes the following purposes:
First, in enabling the shaft to be turned more evenly and easily, by equalizing the strain, only one arm coming against the densest mass of feathers at a time, this being at the point nearest to the lutto where the feathers would naturally settle when sodden with the steam used in cleaning them.
Second, in stirring the feathers more perfectly', and not lifting them up in one mass and dumping them over again, as is tl1e case when the arms a, a, a., 85e., are ranged in straight lines.
And in this effect also is included the more per-y fcctl y forcing the. feathers into the tiek or ease, through openings made for the purpose.
These openings consist of traps, and K, the one, J, made for ticks, -being at the front lower side, and the one, K, for pillow-cases,holsters, &c., being placed at the end.
These and their construction will hereafter be more l fully described.
At the bottom of the main cylinder is a trap, M, which, when open, lea-ves only a sifting-plate, O, to keep the feathers in the cylinder.
This sifter allows the dust and worms to be thoroughly sifted ont of the feathers before steaminf.
The traps K and J are provided with hooks, p p, Src., around their openings, through which the feat-hers are driven, as before described.

The arms a n, Src., are provided with flanges, c c, die., which greatly assist in beating the dust out of the feathers. v
The advantages of these improvements are great, as the feathers are dusted, steamed, and dried perfectly, in their transit through the machine, and finally packed back into the tick without waste in filling.
Now,` having described my invention,
W hat I claim as new, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the arms a. c a, with flanges c c e, in a spiral around the main cylinder H, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the drying-cylimler, constructed is` described, the jacket A, with sifter O, at 'he used in connect-ion with the pipes ch pipes lF h, dse. on of the traps J and K, with and their openings, substantiall y as shown.
