' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUs'rAv A. BADER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strops or Sharpeners for Razors or the like, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to strops or sharpeners for razors and other edged tools, and more particularly to the means for sus pending such strops or Sharpeners, an object of this invention being to provide a suspending means which will permit the opposite surfaces or faces of the strop or sharpener to be presented readily uppermost at will, while at the same time maintaining the strop or sharpener in a flat or untwisted condition.

To these and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

At the present time it is customary to suspend a strop for razors by means of a swivel member or eve, which permits either face of the strop to be presented uppermost. With such a construction. however, the upper end of the strop will not at all times assume an uppermost position when the lower or free end of the strop has been presented uppermost. As a consequence, the strop is twisted and, due to this twisted condition. becomes cut by the razor or tool sharpened thereon. According to this invention it is impossible for the upper portion of the strop to lie in an intermediate position. The upper end must always be presented horizontally, so that the strop will. be maintained in a flat or untwisted condition throughout its length with one of its faces uppermost. v i V Referring more particularly to the draw ings wherein is shown the preferred, construction for carrying out the present invention, 1 indicates the strop, which may be formed of any suitable number of layers and of any suitable material, with its opposite faces adapted to be used for sharpening a razor or other edged tool. The bend (3 of each of the loops provides a recessed portion in which the supporting device 5 is adapted to engage, after being passed through the space or o ening a between the loops. The longer arms 7 of each of these loops connect with the eyes 3, while the shorter arms 8 are connected together by a bend 9 and provide with said bend a cam surface which engages with the supporting device 5, when the strop 1 is turned to cause the strop to pass from one recessed portion. 6 to the other recessed portion.

Assuming that the strop is in the position shown in Fi g. 2 with one of its faces uppermost, and that it is desired to shift the strop to the position shown in Fig. 4, in orderto bring the other face uppermost, the grip portion at the free end of the strop is twisted, while at the same time the tension on the strop is slightly relieved. This causes the cam portions 8, 9 to ride on the supporting member 5, so that the latter will be engaged by the recessed portion 6 which previously was disconnected therewith. While in this recessed portion 6 the tension on the strop prevents the outer end of the latter from turning, and at the same time maintains the strop in a single plane throughout its length, thus preventing the strop from becoming out due to a twist or turn in said strop.

l Vhile the invention is shown as embodied in a structure made from a single piece of wire, it is apparent that the inven tion is not limited to such a construction. The spaced recessed portions 6, with the cam. surface connecting them, may be formed in any other suitable way, and the connection between the suspending device and the strep may also be varied. It is preferred, however, that the suspending device shall be connected to the strop in such a manner that it cannot be moved transversely of the plane of the strop. The pivotal con nection between the suspending device and the strop, so that the suspending device may move in the plane of the strep, may be eliminated.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A strep having a suspending device comprising a member connected to the strop and provided with an opening for the pas sage of support with two supportengag ing portions and with a cam portion conging portions to direct the support from one to the other to present either face of the strop uppermost.

3. A strop having a suspending device connected to the strop and comprising two open loops separated by a space, and each having an arm connected with the strep and a shorter arm connected to the shorter or the other members by a cam portion to direct the support "from one loop to the other to present either face of the strop uppermost.

4. A strop having a suspending device having a connection with the strep to hold said device against movement transversely of the plane of the strop, said device coin prising a member provided with an opening for the passage of a support, with two support-engaging portions and with a cam portion connecting said support engaging portions to direct the support from one to the other to present either face of the strep upperniost.

5. A strop having a suspending device formed from a single piece of wire secured,

at one end to one side of the strop and at the other end to the opposite side of the strop to turn about a pivot extending trans versely of the plane of the strep, the wire being formed bet veen its ends with" two open and spaced loops one arm of each loop connecting with the strep and the other arms connecting by a bend forming a cam surface to direct the support from one loop to the other in order to present either face of the strep uppermost.
