IMPROVEMENTS IN PLOW-*CLEVISES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,339, dated March 5, I872.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, ALBERT A. DAILEY, of YVilson, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glevises for Holding Flows; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description there of, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my-invention consists in the construction. and arrangement of a clevis for plows, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is aplan view of the entire clevis. Fig. 2 is a side view of the washers. Fig. 3 is a rear view of one of the washers; Fig. 4, a front view of the other 5 and Fig. 5, a side view of the front portion of the clevis.

A A represent the jaws or side pieces fastening to the end of the plow-beam, and connected at their front ends by a cross-bar, B. In front of this cross-bar is a frame, 0, with a round hole through its front part, and provided with three tongues, a a, one on each side and one below the hole mentioned, all of said tongues extending inward. The jaws or side pieces, cross-bar, and frame with tongues are all cast in one piece. The tongues a a fit in corresponding grooves made in the washers D and E, which are placed within said frame, and provided with central holes, the hole in the washer D being round, while that in the washer E is square. The washers D and E have two or more sets of tongues and grooves, b b,- as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that they may be turned either to the right or left, and still fit on the tongues a a. G represents the plate, to which the whiffletree is attached, provided with a rod, H, extending through the hole in the frame 0 and the washers D E, and fastened by a nut, I, on its extreme rear end, that part of said rod which passes through the washer E being square to tit the hole in the same. The apparatus for hitching the team consists of a hasp, J, pivoted at its inner end to a post, K, rising from the inner end of the plate G, and perforated at its outer end by ahole to receive a pin that passes through the double whiffletree in the holes in the plate G. This pin is changed to therightand left in the holes in said plate to alter the width of the furrow desired, and the depth of the furrow is regulated by fixing the cross-bar B in notches upon the ends of the plow-beam. These notches are uniformly upon the iron beams of plows, and are to be fastened upon wooden beams, if not already there, on an iron plate. In turning the plow at the ends of the plowed land, the washers are thrown out of gear by the teams slackening its draft, leaving the plow to turn freely.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
