Description

E. STEWART.
Improvement in Plow-Clevises.
No. 129,614. Pafente dluly 16,1872.
Inventor.
I 4 I %W Attorneys.
Witnesses EDWARD STEWART, OF FORT MADISON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT lN PLOW-CLEVISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,614, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD STEWART, of
Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Olevis; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a plowclevis, whereby the double-tree is held horizontal while turning, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertain s to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plowbeam with the clevis and double-tree in position; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical section of the clevis, with the front end of the plow-beam.
A A represent the two arms of the clevis, which are fastened by a pin or common bolt,
0, to the plow-beam B, one on each side of said beam. The front ends of the arms A A are connected by a cross-bar, C, and two horizontal jaws, D D, project from the same, leaving a suitable space between them to receive the double-tree E. The arms A A, with crossbar 0 and jaws D D, are intended to be cast 'in one piece. On the rear side of the cross bar G is a horizontal V-shaped ridge, 1), as shown in Fig. 2. G is a pin, provided with a wrench-head and with saw-teeth projections e 0, between which'the ridge 7) is to be placed. This pin enters a vertical groove or circular recess made vertically in the front end of the plow-beam, with the projections e 0 extending forward. By turning this pin to one side the clevis may be raised or lowered to change the depth, and after the clevis is put in proper position the pin is turned back again, so that the ridge 1) will enter between two of said teeth, and thus the clevis be held in the position put. In the jaws D D are three holes, 2' i, for the purpose of taking more or less land by putting the double-tree pin (1 in any one of the holes.
With this clevis the driver has perfect control over the double-trees while the team is plowin g. The clevis holds the double-trees up and keeps them free from the horses heels when turning, thereby enabling even a boy to plow with a fractious or kicking team, which he could not do with the common clevis. It causes the plow to run steady, lightens the draft, and allows of ateam being hitched closer to the plow.
The front end of the clevis or the jaws D D may be changed somewhat in form or construction, only so that the double-trees are held in a horizontal position when turning the plow.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The clevis, consisting of the arms A A, cross-bar C, and horizontal jaws D D, all made in one piece, for holding the double-tree in a horizontal position while turning, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the clevis A O D, with V-shaped ridge 1), and the pin G, with projections 6 e, substantially as and for the purposes herein set'forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of April, 1872.
EDWARD STEWART.
