SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,943, dated June 20, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, BLUFoRD A. TABER, of Halls Hill, in the county of Rutherford and State of Tennessee, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaifns to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany/in gdrawings, which form a part of vthis specication, and in which- Figure lis aperspective view of my improved cnltivator. Fig. 2is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through line a: w, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a similar'` section through line y y of the same figure.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention contemplates an improved construction of so-called 'walking-cultivators, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The frame of my improved cultivator consists of a single beam, A, of wood, of suitable length, width, and thickness. The rear end of this beam is'split or slotted longitudinally for about one-third of its length, as shown at a, to receive the adjustable shank B of the hind or rear plow, B. The projecting rear end of shank B is curved, as usual, and has secured to its lower end a bulls-tongue or other suitable shovel,B, according to the special nature of the work for which the cultivator is de signed.

C and U are the side irons,eacl1 one of which is shaped or bent to form two shoulders, as shown at b and c, respectively. The forward straight part of each of the irons C in front of shoulder b is bolted to the side'of beam A (one on each side) by a pair of bolts, (shown at D and E,) one of which,D, also serves as a means of attachment for the cultivatorfhandles F F.

G is a brace-bar of round iron, which is inserted transversely through the slotted end of the plowbeam and connects the shouldered parts c c of the side irons, C O, thus bracing the latter, each of which has a shovel, C', at its lower end. or shank, B, has a hole or round aperture, d, girongh which brace Gr passes, as shown in H is a yoke, which passes around the rear end of the slotted plow-beam and up to the handles F F, to which its ends are bolted or otherwise secured, thus bracing the handles and holding them rigidly in position at the proper angle, while at the same time its lower pant or shoe, which passes around the rear end of the slotted tongue or beam A, prevents it from splitting or breaking. This lower end or shoe of the yoke, where it is connected to the beam, has a series of holes, h, through which a bolt or pin, i, may be inserted, which passes through a hole', k, in shank B, as shown more clearly in the sectional view, Fig. 3. This construction permits of the vertical adjustment ot' the rear end of shank B withits plow orshovel for vthe purpose 0f regulating the elevation of the front end ot' the beam, to which the draft is applied, and thereby regulating the pitch 7 or set ot' the shovels in a simple and expeditious manner.
