Description

S. SEVERY.
Cultivators.
4No.`1507l9. ,Patented May12,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
SOLOMON SEVERY, OF WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT' TO LAWSON DJ" GRAY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,7 [9, dated May 12, 1874; application filed February 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, SOLOMON ,SEvERY1 of Walpole, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oultivators, of which the following is a description sufiiciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art .or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the draftbar, supporting-wheels, and handles.
Like letters refer to like parts in the different gures of the drawing.
My invention relates more especial-ly to the teeth of the cultivator; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the same, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, the object being to provide a simpler, more durable, and effective implement of this character than is now in common use. The extreme simplicity of my invention renders an elaborate description-unnecessary.
In Fig. 1, A is the central or draft bar, to which the frame-bars C D E F are connected by the cross-ties a d. The bar s C D E F are arranged radially to the bar A, and are rendered adjustable laterally thereto by means of the links b c e f. To the eXtreme forward end of each of the bars A C D E F there is attached a curved tooth, Gr, projecting forward and downward, as shown in Fig. 2. These teeth are provided with sockets or shoulders for attaching them firmly to the bars, and are pointed after the style of ordinary teeth. On the under side of the. bar A two carrying-4 wheels, k l, are disposed, the wheel being rendered vertically adjustable by the lugs g. The handles B B are attached to the rear end, and the whiflie-eye h to the forward end of said draft-bar. It is well known to all practically acquainted with the subject that cultivators framed in this vmanner are usually drawn in a direction tending to close the radial arms, or bring them into line with the central bar; but,
'as will be seen, my improved cultivator is drawn in an opposite direction, or one tending to open or spread the arms. The teeth being attached directly to the ends of the bars of the frame will resist a greater strain without becoming loose or breaking than when set in any other manner. They are also less liable to clog, and consequently perform better work. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a cultivator, the beams A C D E F, hinged together at their rear ends and spreading toward the front, adjustable by the bars b c c f, and provided with the curved teeth G, attached directly to the front ends of the beams, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
. SOLOMON SEVERY. Witnesses:
' C. A. SHAW,
H. E. METOALE.
