Description

(No Model.)
0. B. TRIPP & G. w. VEYNTERS.
GULTIVATOR.
,823., Patented Sept. 22, 1891.
Wifzyzsses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CALEB B. TRIPP AND GEORGE \V. VENTERS, OF CALICO, NORTH CAROLINA.
CU LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,823, dated September 22, 1891.
Application filed January 15, 1891- Serial No. 377,373- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatwe, CALEB B. TRIPP and GEORGE W. VENTERS, citizens of the United States, residing at Calico, in the county of Pitt and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Cultivator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cultivators for cultivating corn, rice, cotton, tobacco, &c.; and the objects in view are to provide a cultivator of cheap and simple construction adapted to cultivate the opposite sides of rows and be capable of reversal, so as to operate as a right or left hand cultivator.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a cultivator constructed in accordance with my invent-ion. Fig. 2 isasimilar view in detail of the reversible cultivator bar or head.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The beam 1 has let into its rear end an ina clined standard 2, in the upper front face of which is let a transverse rung 3, extending at each side of the standard. Handles 4 are bolted to the opposite sides of the beam 1, are connected to the ends of the rung 3, and terminate beyond the same in hand-holds.
5 designates the cultivator bar or head, and the same is provided at its center with a pair of gains or recesses 6, formed in its upper face and at an angle to each other. Each gain or recess is adapted to receive the under edge of the beam 1, and to be secured thereto by means of a pair of bolts 7, for which each gain or recess is provided with a pair of openings 8 near its ends. At eachside of the gains or recesses the head or bar is provided with tapered openings 9, into which are inserted the upper tapered shanks of suitable cultivator-teeth 10, there beinga pair of openings and teeth at each side of the beam; but this number may be increased ordiminished, as desired. By loosening the bolts 7 it will be apparent that the head or bar may be swung so as to dispose the same either to the right or left of the beam 1, in which position it may be fastened to the bolts, and thus adapted to perform the functions of either a right or left hand cultivator.
A device constructed after my invention will be found very serviceable, strong, and durable, and, if desired, may be braced by a pair of diverging braces or straps 11, the front ends of which are connected with the beam 1 and the rear ends to the two outer teeth of the series.
Having described our invention, what we claim is The combination, with the beam 1, rectangular in cross-section, of the bar or head 5, carrying the teeth, said head or bar being provided upon its upper side and at its center with two crossing recesses or gains disposed at an angle to each other, thereby forming angular end walls, said gain fitting and receiving the under side of the beam, and the bolts passed through the beam and bar, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CALEB B. TRIPP. G. W. VENTERS. Witnesses:
B. S. SHEPPAD, Z. Z. MOORE.
