To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLFORD F. ABER- CROMBIE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allen, in the county of Pontotoc and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cultivators of that class in which a plurality of blade carrying shanks are supported adjustably between a pair of clamping beams, said clamping beams being arranged pivotally with reference to the tongue or draft bar.

The invention has for its object to simplify and improve the construction of this class of devices, and with these and other ends in View, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved con struction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing,Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cultivator constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4. is a sectional detail view taken on the line 1 1 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the tongue carrying clamp or adjusting member. Fig. 6 is a detail view.

The frame of the improved cultivator is composed of two elongated bars 1 and 2 each provided with a horizontal slot 3 extending nearly the entire length thereof. These bars are disposed in parallel relation, the bar 1 being arranged in front of the bar 2, and said bars are connected together by a plurality of bolts 1 extending through the slots 3, 3.

The bars 1 and 2 are spaced apart by the blade carrying shanks 5 and the holding members 6. Said holding members consist of plates 6 provided adjacent to their upper and lower edges with flanges 7 engaging the upper and lower edges of the rear frame bar 2. The front face of each plate 6 is provided With a vertical groove or recess, shaped to receive one of the blade carrying shanks 5, said shanks being of 00- tagonal cross section so that three faces thereof will engage the recess 8, while one face will abut upon the rear side of the front frame bar 1. WVhen the shanks are thus adjusted, and the bolts are tightened, they will be held securely against turning, as will be readily understood, but they may be axially adjusted by slightly loosening the nuts upon the bolts 4, so as to present the blades at the desired slant toward the front. The tongue carrying member consists of a plate D of semi-circular shape having a downwardly extending flange 9 which is provided with a slot 10 for the passage of two of the connecting bolts 1, whereby the said tongue carrying member will be securely connected with the frame. The tongue 11 is pivoted upon the carrying member D by means of a bolt 12, and it has another bolt 13 which extends therethrough and through an arcuate slot 14L in the carrying member. The upper face of the latter is arovided with teeth 15 adapted to intermes h with teeth 16 upon the underside of the tongue, which latter may thus be adjusted to various positions or at various angles with reference to the frame composed of the bars 1 and 2. Handles 17 are suitably connected with the tongue adjacent to the rear end of the latter.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, the advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The tongue may be adjusted at various angles with reference to the draft frame which will thus be tilted, thereby causing the tooth carrying shafts to engage the ground at various distances apart. The tooth-carrying shanks may be axially adjusted to present the blades at the desired angle.

The general construction is simple and inexpensive, and the improved implement will be found to be thoroughly efficient for all cultivating purposes.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. In a cultivator, longitudinally slotted front and rear frame bars, connecting bolts, shank holding members between the frame bars intermediate the bolts, said shank holding members having vertical angular grooves, blade-carrying shanks of polygonal cross section seated in said grooves and having flat faces abutting upon the rear side of the front frame bar, a tongue holding member having a slotted flange engaging the front frame bar for the passage of some of the connecting bolts, a tongue pivoted upon said member, and means for securing the tongue in adjusted position.

2. In a cultivator, a frame comprising front and rear bars and bolts connecting the same, shanks and shank holding members clamped between vthe frame bars, a tongue holding member having a vertical flange slotted for the passage of some of the connecting bolts and secured by such bolts upon the front side of the front frame bar, said holding member having an arcuate slot and teeth formed adjacent thereto, a tongue pivoted upon the holding member and having teeth intermeshing With the teeth of sa1d member, and a clamping bolt extending through'theltongue and through the arcuate slot ofx'theholding member.
