Description

D. 6.. STOVE-R.
OULTIVATOR.
Nqi 56,289., Patented July 10, 1866.
Wib-zesses. fiww 6 5% aid a4,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
1). o. sTovERQoF LANARK, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,289, dated July 10, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D.G. STOVER, of Lanark, in'the county of Carroll and State of Illinois, haveinvented a new and Improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable. those skilled in the art to spondin g parts.
A represents a rectangular frame, which is mounted on two wheels, B I), and has a draftpole, 0, attached to it, and D D are two plowbeams, the front ends of which are fitted loosely on a shaft, E, at the under side of the front cross-bar, a, of--the' frame A. r
The plow-beams D are connected in front of the axle F by links G, with arms or cranks b at the end of a shaft, H, said shaft having its bearings at the under side of the axle F, and provided at its center with a foot-piece or treadle, I, which projects behind the axle.
The beams D D have each an upright, c, attached, and the upper ends of these uprights are connected by a cross-bar, d, to which two pendent bars, J J, are attached by bolts 0, the
latter passing through any of a series of holes in plates fat the upper ends of bars J, in order to admit of the latter being adjusted higher or lower, as may be desired.
The two bars J J are connected by two bars, K K, the latter being secured to the former by pivots, and the bars K K are connected together by a pivot, 9, one bar, K, projecting considerably beyond K to serve as a handle, by operating which the bars J J may be moved toward and from each other.
The lower ends of the bars J J are attached to plow-beams L L, the front ends of which are secured to the front cross-bar, a, of the frame A by universal joints.
The rear parts of thebeams D D L L have plow-standards M attached to them, as follows: The upper parts, a", of these standards at one side are made of semi-cylindrical form, and are fitted in concave sockets N, attached to the beams by bolts It, said bolts also securing the standards to the socketsby passing through slotsi in the standards, said slots being of V shape, or gradually increasing in width from the outer to the inner sides of the standards, as shown in Fig. 4. This arrangement, it will be seen, admits of the plows N, which are secured to the standards, being turned so as to throw the earth either from or toward the plants, as may be desired, and said arrange: ment possesses the advantageof allowingthe standards to turn back inease of the breaking of the braces j, the sockets N turning on the bolts h. 7
It will be seen that the plows of the beams L L may be readily moved laterally to conform to the ,sinuosities of the rows of plants by operating" the lever K, and that all of the pl ows may be raised out of the ground when required for deposing the treadle I.
The device is extremely simple, and there are no-parts liable to get out of repair or become deranged by use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- The arrangement of the uprights 0 c andbar at with the pendent bars J J and plowbeams D D L L.
