, ADJUSTABLE reserp ne DEVICE.
To'allwhom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, EBEN- R. PACKER, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmette, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Derailing Devices, and
declare the following to be a full, clear, and
eXact description of the same, such as will enable others'skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
which form apart of this specification;
My invention has for one of its objects to produce a simple derailing device adjust-' ing device inwhich the hinge connection between the block and'its support is radially adjustable and, in my present device, I make use of this same radial adjustment but vary the structural details so as to make'the device simpler and stronger.
A'second object of my invention is to produce a strong, light, rigid support or standard on which may be mounted a hinged or swinging derailing block.
The various features of novelty whereby" my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of its objectsand advantages, reference may be had to'the followlng detaileddescription taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of a derailing de vice embodying both features of my invention looking to the side which is next to the rail, and portions being broken away to expose other portions; 7 r
Fig. 2 is a top plan view;
Fig. 3 is an end' View of the device illus trated in Fig. l, a railway-rail being illustrated in conjunction with the device;
Fig.;4"is a top plan view of a slightly modified form offldevicein cooperativerelation toa rail, and Figs. 5 and 6 are respectivelya top plan viewand an end elevation of a sti l further" modified form in operative relation toa" rail.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, 1 represents a flat plate adapted to rest at its ends upon two railway ties and be held against displacement in the direction Specification of Letters Patent.

of'the length of the rails not only by suit-V able'fastening devices but also by means of a downwardly projecting shoulder which may conveniently take the form of a framelike" rib or flangeadapted to fit between and abut against two adjacent ties. At the in-' neredge of the plate are upwardly andinwardly projecting extensions, 8, adapted to fit against the web of a rail, 4. Projecting upwardly from the top of the plate are separated posts or standards, 5, which may conveniently be strengthened and reinforced by suitable webs, 6, extending inwardly and connected with the members 3. The plate preferably has the middle portion removed so that it itself is in the form of a frame-like structure surrounding a'large central opening, 7. a This arrangement permits great strength to be combinedwith lightness. I
Between thestandards, 5, is hinged a derailing block, --8, of any suitable construction.
The block illustrated in the figures under 1 discussion is a common form of block operative to derail a wheel traveling in one direction only. The block is provided with arms, 9, projecting outwardly from the bottom thereof and spaced apart so as to be a comfortable working fit between the two standards. The arms are stiffened and braced by means of a web, 10, extending from the top of one to the top of the other. Abolt, 11, passing through the standards and the arms serves to hold the block p'ivotally on the stationary support. In order to make the device adjustable to rails of different heights, I make the openings in the stand ards through which the bolt passes in the form of vertically elongated slots, 12; provide the; outer faces of the standards with transverse teeth, 13; and arrange between the head, 14, and the nut, 15, of the bolt washers,'-16,fhaving teeth, 17 adapted to mesh with the teeth on the standards. hen
. the two washers are brought properly into mesh withthe teeth on thestandards and the nut 'onthe bolt is tightened, the bolt is I wrtmnrrnitmnois, ASSIGNOR To a a o COMPANY, on NEW YORKCN'. ,Y., A CORPORATION or MAINE.
rigidly clamped" against vertical displacement. The adjustment of rails to difierent heights is therefore secured by simply loosening the nut, shifting the washers up or down and then again tightening the nut.
One of the arms, 9, is provided with an outwardly projecting perforated boss, 18,,by means of which the swinging block may be attached to a target stand connection. The
