To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALvus H. Morrnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larned, in the county of Pawnee and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for securing railroad rails to the ties, and is particularly intended for use in connection with concrete or analogous ties.
The primary object is to provide a simple structure that will not weaken or injure the tie, and is readily applicable thereto.
Two forms of construction are disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a tie, with the rails thereon secured by one embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view on the line XX of Fig. 3. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the tie plate sections or elements. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the rail clamp employed. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a modified form of construction. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the tie plate elements or sections.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the embodiment disclosed in Figs. 1-5 inclusive, the tie, which may be of any preferred form, is shown at 1, and located thereon, are spaced rails 2, each of these rails being secured in place by the novel mechanism, which includes a pair of tie plate elements or sections 3. These sections or elements, as shown, comprise tieembracing hooks 4 that engage over opposite sides of the tie, and flat-rail-supporting shelves 5 that outstand from the hooks and from the ties. Located on opposite sides of these shelves, are strap portions 6 that extend on opposite sides of the rail and terminate in upstanding ears 7. The straps 6 extend over rail-clamping plates 8 and the upstanding ears are connected by bolts 9 that pass through openings 10 in said ears. In order to prevent the movement of the rails toward and from each other on the tie, a bar 11 extends forwardly on the tie between the rails, and has its ends located between the ears 7, said ends being secured by the bolts 9 arranged on the inner sides of the rails. If desired, holding hooks 12 may be engaged around the ends of the tie, and in like manner be secured to the tie plate sections through the medium of the outer bolts 9.
In the modification disclosed in Fig. 6, the tie is'designated 13, and the rail is shown at 14:. The tie plate sections include hooks 15 that engage over opposite sides of the tie, these hooks having flat portions 16 that in this form are interposed between the tie and rail. The sections or elements are furthermore provided with integral rail-engaging hooks 17 and they have diagonally extending portions oppositely disposed, which portions are shown at 18. These portions terminate in upstanding ears 19, and other ears 20 are formed upon the said sections. The arrangement issuch that the car 19 of one of the sections or elements is disposed alongside the car 20 of the other, as
will be evident by reference to Fig. 6, so that bolts 21 can be passed therethrough to effectively clamp the sections in their operative positions. A connecting bar 23 is preferably employed extending from one pair of the tieplates to the other, and hooks 24 may be employed that engage about the ends of the tie, the bar 23 and hooks 24 being secured by the bolts 21 and between the ears 19 and 20.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages ofthe herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
' Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a tie and rail, of means for securing the rail to the tie, including oppositely disposed tie-embracing elements, a device connecting the elements, and means engaged with said device for holding the rail against movement longitudinally of the tie.
2. The combination with a tie and rail, of means for securing the rail to the tie, including oppositely disposed tie-embracing hooks, a bolt connecting the hooks, and means through which the bolt passes for holding the rail against displacement longitudinally of the tie.
3. The combination with. a'tie, of. spaced rails thereon, means for securing the rails to the tie, including tie-embracing elements for each rail,'a device connecting the elements for each rail, and a connecting bar engaged With the devices for holding the rails against relative movement longitudinally of the tie.
4. The combination With a tie and spaced rails thereon, of means for securing the rails to the tie, including oppositely disposed tieembracing hooks for each rail, a bolt connecting the hooks for eachrail, and a bar disposed longitudinally of the tieand engaged With the bolts.
5. The combination With a tie and spaced rails thereon, of means for securing the rails to the tie, including oppositely disposed tieembracing hooks for each rail, said hooks having upstanding ears arranged on the inner sides of the rails, bolts connecting the coacting ears, and a bar disposed longitudinally of the tie and engaged With the bolts between the ears.
6. The combination With a tie and a rail' thereon, of a tie plate member comprising sections having fiat rail-supporting portions, and oppositely disposed tie-embraclng portions, and devices connecting the sections to secure them in coacting relation.
7. The combination with a tie and a rail thereon, of a tie plate member comprising sections having fiat supporting portions for the rail and oppositely disposed tie-embracing hooks, upstanding ears, and bolts con necting the ears.
I 8. The combination with a tie and spaced rails thereon, of tie plate members for each rail comprising sections having flat support ing portions for the rail, oppositely disposed tie embracing hooks, and upstanding ears that are located on opposite sides of the rail, bolts connecting the ears, and a bar dis posed longitudinally of the tie and having its ends engaged With the bolts on the inner sides of the rail between the ears.
