JAMES '1. WADE, 0F BRADY, TEXAS.
RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed August 1, 1919. Serial No. 314,681.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brady, in the county of'McCulloch and State of Texas, have invented new and use- .ful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail fastening devices and aims to provlde means for securing the rails to a tie in such manner as to prevent relative lateral movement or spreading of the rails.
Another object is the provision of means for securing the rails to the tie to prevent creeping, the securing means which may be bolted to the rails being practically apart of the tie.
A further object is the provision of a rail fastening device which is simple in construction, positive in operation and which may be adjusted'by means of an ordinary wrench.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the invention with the rail secured thereon.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a central section taken longitudinally of the tie.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tie, the rails and the adjustable clamps being removed.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the adjustable clamps.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the numeral 10 indicates a tie, which is preferably formed of metal and channel shaped in cross section. The sides of the tie are tapered toward their ends so as to provide a firmer seat within the road bed to prevent longitudinal movement of the tie.
Located adjacent each end of the tie is a stationary clamp 11, which comprises a sub stantially vertical portion 12, adapted to fit within the outside fishing space of the rail 13. The clamp 11 also includes an inwardly extending flange 14, which is adapted to extend under the base flange of the rail, the meeting point of this flange 14 and the vertical portion 13 being provided with a groove 15 to receive the rail flange. The stationary clamp 11 is braced against outward movement with respect to the tie, through the medium of a web 16.
The opposite side of the rail 13 is engaged by adjustable clamps 17, which clamps are secured to and movable longitudinally of the tie. They include substantially vertical portions 18, which fit the fishing space upon the inside of the rails and outwardly extending flanges 19, which cooperate with the flanges 14, to provide a wear plate for the base of the rail. The meeting edges of the flanges 14 and 19 are formed to provide an overlapping joint, as indicated at 20, so that when the rail is secured in position, the clamps 11 and 17 provide a chair within which the rail is securely planted. If desired, the vertical portion of each of the clamps may be provided with openings, which register with the openings in the web of the rails, so that bolts or other fastening devices may be passed therethrough.
The adjustable clamps 17 are further provided with inwardly extending projections 21, the underfaces of which are provided with ribs 22. These ribs are received within a groove 23, extending longitudinally of the tie, so that a guide is provided for the adjustable clamps. The extensions 21 are formed with longitudinally extending slots 24, through which pass bolts 25, carried by the tie, the heads of these bolts being disposed within the channel of the tie, so that their threaded ends will project upward beyond the extensions 21 for the reception of suitable'washers and nuts 26 and 27, respectively.
The inner ends of each of the extensions 21 of the adjustable clamps are provided with sockets 28, for the reception of the opposite ends of a threaded rod 29, which has mounted thereon adjusting nuts 30 and washers 31. This provides for spreading the adjustable clamps into proper engagement with the rails 13 and securely holding them against inward movement through the medium of the adjusting nuts, while the nuts provided upon the ends of the bolts 25 hold the clamps firmly against the upper face of the top.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that the invention provides means for securing the rails to the tie in a manner to prevent disalinement, creeping or spreading and Will also securely hold the rails against movement in a vertical direction due to the pounding or Weight'of the cars.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of description and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim. 7
Having described the invention, What is claimed is:
The combination with a tie, of a clamp secured to each end thereof for engagement with the outer flange of the rail, a groove extending longitudinally of the tie between said clamps, said groove having openings in the bottom Wall thereof extending through the tie, adjustable clamps engageable with the inner flanges of the rails, a centrally ar ranged member extending at right angles from each of said adjustable clamps, a rib extending longitudinally of each of the centrally arranged members and sliable in the groove of the tie, a threaded rod having its ends entering sockets provided in the inner ends of thesaid'centrally arranged members to adjust the clamps to the rails and bolts extending 1 upwardly through the tie openings and passing through elongated openings in the centrally arranged members of the adjustable clamps to permit of ad- With the tie.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature.
