To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALBERT S. CASH and 7 ROBERT H. BRIsooE, citizens of the United v rails,
States, residing at Elizabethtown, in the county of Hardin and State ofKentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rails, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in rails and means for connecting the and an object of the invention is to produce a rail having its head thicker at one of its longitudinal edges than at its opposite lon itudinal edge so as to provide the tread surflace of the head at an angle or at an inclination which corresponds with the inclination of the tread or flange of the wheels of the rolling stock which travels upon the said rails, and also to provide a" splice or connecting member which includes a head or crest arranged at an inclination corresponding with the inclination of the head of the rail.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim. In the drawing: Figure Tie a perspective view of two rails constructed and connected in accordance with the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a greatly enlarged transverse sectional view through one of the rails at the joint thereof, the dotted lines indicating the position of the car wheel upon the rail and joint member, while other dotted lines indicate the construction l of the ordinary railway rail.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numerals 1 designate rails which are constructed in accordance with the present invention. These rails include the usual base flange 2, heads 3 and connecting webs l. The heads 3 are thickened at their outer side so as to arrange the tread or bearing portions 5 of the said heads at an inclination. This inclination corresponds with the inclined treads of the wheels of the rolling stock, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the draw ings, by the dotted lines. The base flange 2, at the inner longitudinal edges thereof, is preferably of a less width than that of the ordinary rail, while the said base flanges 'terially at the outer sides of the rails are of a magreater width than that of the inner flange or that of the ordinary flange of rails, the widened portion or flange being indicated by the numeral 6.
To connect the rails we employ upon the inner sides thereof angle bars 7 of the ordinary construction, and angle bars 8 for the outer sides of said rails which are also substantially of the ordinary construction except the same have their body portions thickened and are provided with extensions forming crests .for the heads 9. The tread surfaces of the heads are beveledfias at 10,
the said beveled portion corresponding with the inclined tread surface of the heads of the rails. The members 7 and 8 may have their horizontal portions notched for the reception of suitable securing elements in the nature of spikeswhich enter the supporting ties, and their vertical plates are provided with openings which register with the bolt openings in the webs of the rails and through which pass the usual bolts that are provided with the ordinary securing nuts.

vantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:
The combination of a pair of rails each having a tread inclined downward from the outside of the rail toward the inside thereof, fish plates for connecting the alining ends of said rails, one of said fish plates being confined between the lower ed e of the tread and the upper edge of the ase flange, the other fish plate having. an extension, the upper edge of which is in the same plane throughout its length and lateral-lg inclined in the same plane as the upper sur ace of the tread.
