To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GLAUsING, a citizen of the United-States, residing in the city of Portsmouth, in the county of Sc1oto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, Case of which the following is a specification. One of the objects of the invention is to produce a simple, strong and practical last which can be broken or flexed so as to facilitate the ready removal of the last from the shoe and so that the shoe, during the removal of the last, will not be marred or broken or pulled out of shape. 4
According to the present invention, a last is constructed so that it will comprise a toe part and a heel part having provided between them main bearing pins or members that extend horizontally and transversely to the last. The toe and heel parts preferably bear directly against said pins and are maintained in proper position relative to said pins by a connecting link that is connected at one end to the toe part of the last and at the other end to the heel part of the last by small pivot pins or rivets that pass through said link. x
The last'is also provided with a. spring means or locking mechanism which engages an end portion of said link. This spring or locking mechanism just referred to is preferably mounted in and carried by the toe portion of the last and is arranged so as to engage the under side of a projecting free end portion at the forward end of said link, whereby the pressure exerted by the spring will tend to constantly force the link to the positionwhich'the link occupies when the last parts are in extended position.
As showing a specific embodiment of the invention, reference is made to the drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure. 1 shows a vertical sectional view taken as on the plane indicated by the line 11 of Fig. 2. In said Fig. 1 the parts are shown in their extended or unbroken position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken as on the plane indicated by the line 22 ofFig; 1 and is a viewlooln'ng in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a view taken as on the plane 3--3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
The last is designated by the reference toe part B and the rear or heel part C. In'
the formation of these lasts these two parts are preferably made integral with each other fromthe same piece of wood andthey are separated as by sawing.
From an inspection of .Fig. 1 it will be observed that a V-shaped portion has been cut out or removed from the upper portion of the last, whereby the heel part and the toe part can be moved relative to each other and on the main bearing pins or members D that are provided between said last parts.
The longitudinally extending link E is pivotally connected at the rear end thereof to the heel part G by means of the rivet or pin F and at the forward portion or end to the toe part B by means of the rivet or pin G. The rivets F and G are frequently referred to as a set of rivets. This link is preferably arranged so that when the last parts are in their extended position the line last parts are moved to their unbroken position, the line that passes throughthe center of the rivets G and F assumes a position above the center line of the main'bearing pins B. y
This construction is, preferably the same as that shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,085,668, which was granted on February 3, 1914, for improvements in lasts invented by myself.
In the present construction the forward end or forward end portion of the link is extended as at H somewhat. beyond the rivet in the toe part, namely rivet G of the sets o"f rivets F and G. This allows a free or movable portion at the forward end of the link and this free forward portion is cut out .on its under side in order to provide a seat L against which a spring locking or spring holding mechanism l /i presses. This spring locking mechanism comprises a compression spring N and the cap, ball or-hcad O and this means is located ahead of the rivet or pin G;
in other words is located outside of the set of rivets, that is, is located beyond the rivets and not at one of the rivets nor between the rivets. As this spring continuously presses upwardly, against the movable, extending or projecting forward end of said link, it consequently tends to force downwardly the portion of the link between the rivet pins G and E,.whereby the last parts will tend to assume their extended position, if not in that position, and also whereby the link tends to maintain said last parts in extended position jwhen in said position.
The connecting link shown is preferably formed of a round piece of material which has been flattened at opposite sides at e, as will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 3, and a receiving space for said link is provided in the toe and heel parts as by boring holes or in any other suitable manner. In order that the last parts may be flexed or moved to broken position, a portion at the top has been cut out or removed, as at XYZ.
The main bearing pins D are each provided on their adjacent inner end with the head or enlarged portion d and in the construction shown on the drawings it is not necessary to directly secure the main bearing pins or members D to the toe or heel part, since according to the construction illustrated on the drawings in the present application, the connecting link Y holds the heel and toe parts together so that a receiving socket will be provided between them for the main bearing pins, and manifestly the said pins when in place will not move outwardly from their operative position between said parts because .they are prevented from doing so by said enlarged heads or flange portions d. The inward movement of said bearing pins is limited by their inner ends engaging the side portions of the connecting link.
The improvements herein set forth are not limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described and may be embodied in various forms and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
l. A last having a toe part, a heel part movable relative thereto, main bearin pins or members between said heel and toe parts, a link pivotally connected at one end -to said heel part by a pin or rivet and at the other end to said toe part by a pin or rivet, which link has an end portion that lies beyond the rivets, and a spring holding means which engages said end portion in a manner to hold the last parts in extended or unbroken position when in said position.
2. A last having a toe part, a heel part movable relative thereto, horizontally and transversely extending main bearing pins said last bein rovided at its up er )ortion with a cutaway portion whereby the toe part can be swung to flexed orbroken position relative to the heel part.
.3. A last having a toe part, a heel partmovable relative to the toe part, the movement of which heel part takes place on main bearing pins or members that are on or engage the toe part, a link'connected at one end to the heel part by a pin or-rivet and at the other endto the toe part by a pin or rivet, said link having an end portion that extends beyond tire rivets which constitute a set of rivets, the line passing through the center of said rivets being located below the center line of the main bearing pins or members when the heel and toe parts are in extended position, and a spring holding means which presses upwardly against said exte jding end portion.
4. A last having a toe movable relative thereto bearing pins common to said pivotally connected at one en part andat the other end to the toe part, which link has a forwardly projecting or extending end portion, and a compression spring seated in the toe part, which spring extends upwardly and rearwardly so as to press against said forwardly projecting or extending end portion.
5. A last having a toe part, a heel part, a link pivotally connected to the toe part, which link is also pivotally connected to the heel part, said link also having an end portion that lies beyond the set of rivets connecting the link to the toe and heel parts, and a spring means comprising a compression spring and ball, the latter of which engages the under side of said forwardly extending end portion of said link, one end of said spring engaging the ball and the other end of said spring being seated in the bottom of part, a heel part and upon main arts, a link to the heel a cavity that is provided within the toe part.
